By Sylvester Rawling. R. GATTI emptied his bag of novelties for the seagon at the Metropolitan Opera House jast night when he presented for the ‘first time in America, in operatic form, Tchaikovsky's “Eugene On- gin.” The opera was sung in Italian, and although it was acclaimed bois- terously by that part of a capacity audience standing behind the rail and im the galleries, largely of Russian Dirth, it will not prove a sensation. Neither the story, which ts too tenu- ous, nor the music, which rarely rises above the pretty and pleasing, grips. The book rests upon a poem by Pushkin. A widowed Ruwian gentle- woman, Larina, has two daughters, Tatiana and Olga. The latter is in Jove with and beloved by Lenski. This gentleman introduces to the family his friend Onegin, to whom Tatiana Mnoontinently loses her heart. In Larina’s garden, at the beginning, there are characteristic peasant dances, with two children admirable soloists. Then in Larina’s ballroom @ waltz and a mazurka are prettily done. Finally, in Prince Gremin's palace, there is a picturesque Scotch @ance. The scene of the duel is a winter landscape, just about dawn, ‘with snow falling over a frozen lake, an which ts reflected a light from a cottage. Tatiana’s bedroom, in which she writes the letter, is an effective in- terior. The scenery 1s painted by Joseph Urban, who also designed the ve costumes, The mis-en- scene was prepared by Richard Or- dyneki. A duel is arranged. Onegin kills Lenski, and disappears.
