Boxing Doomed | If Jack Dempsey Is Not Barred (Special to The Brening Word.) ALBANY, March 23,— Senator James J. Walker's boxing bill is in danger of defeat in the Assembly through the fear of the former ser- vice men in the Lower House that its provisions will permit Jack Demp- sey fighting in New York. Unless iv is amended to make it a certainty that such 4 proposition cannot take place it appears to be doomed. Tho strength of the bill, oddly enough, in the Assembly lies in the fact that the veterans there are in favor of boxing, but Dempsey is about as popular with them as @ rman machine nest was in the war, The bill was advanced to third reading in the Senate without inter- ference. The ex-service men of the Lower House will have a conference to-night at which it is intended to frame some compromise to be sub- mitted to Senator Walker, 1 will suggest that a proviston ade that no person shall be per- se in a boxing exhidi- tion in New York who is accused of having Jed the draft, or is under indictunent for that offense, ar who has been proved disloyal. - ——- Eastern Women Break Even tn Frisco nnis Matches, GAN FRANCISCO, March 23.—Play in the Bast va. There came nearly being no game It was only after Ed] Barrow, Manager of the Red Sox, heard the big crowd yelling for action that he allowed proceedings to start, with Bill Brennan as the only umpire. | Before McGraw left to visit his oil well on Sunday night, he told Matty that if Gus Rooney, the Boston writer umpired of the bases, not to play. In the game on Saturday at Dallas, Fred Toney hit @ drive to right with the bases filled. Toney loafed going down to first and Hooper threw the ball to McInnis. Rooney called the pitcher out. The Giants disagreed with the decison, claiming that Mc- Innis pulled his foot off the bag. Barrow insisted that Rooney umpire the game yesterday, and Matty declared that the Glants would not play if such was the case, Batting practice was dyer and the crowd demanded action for its money. Rooney was on the field with Brennan ready to start the proceedings. ‘After a delay of ten minutes, Barrow allowed the game to start with only Tirennan umpiring. ‘The manager of the Red Sox, however, declafed that he would ask "Ban Johnson to send an American League umpire with the cams. ‘eihe Giants hit the ball hard yes- terday and had little or no trouble tn scoring. JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 23.— It leaked out to-day that the fans out in Wheatville, as the left field bleach- rs are called at Hbbets Field, came near losing their idol this year. Capt. Zack had a hunch last fall that he was to figure in a three-cornered deal that would land him in Philly— Eppa Rixey to go to Boston and Hank Gowdy to Brooklyn, At that time Unefe Robbie wanted a live catcher, the Braves needed a left handed pitcher and Gravvy Cravath wag in the market for an outfielder. Wheat’s hunch went wrong, but at the Chicago meeting he was allowed to talk over the salary question with Rickey of the St, Louis club in con- nection with a deal cooked up by Squire Hbbets. The trade involved a Cardinal pitcher and outfielder. It fell through because Rickey wuld not meet Zack’s salary demands Wheat says he would like to play with some other club than the Dod- gers before he quits the game. Joe Conlan, the Chicago semi-pro, southpaw, has asked Robbie to give him a chance at the Yanks to-day, The kid is confident he .can do as well as Uhle, the Cleveland sand- lotter, Who Was a sensation with the indians last season.
