f » é { ’ , Song and Piano Recitals By Syives.er Rewling. BENT, with the penitence it in- volves, and the flitting of the Chicago Opeta Association, with Mts hullabaloo of sensation and nolse, have caused a temporary stagnation im the local music world. One con- ert of chamber music and three un- exciting recitals comprised the whole of yesterday's endeavor. At Acolion Halil, last night, the Ghamber Music Society, of which Carolyn Beebe is director, gave the last of its season's subwcription con- certs. Miss Beebe, whose individual accomplishments as pianist need no vush, is indefatigable in research for material and an adept at programme making. She was not as happy this time as usual, for the principal work, Chopin. sincerity, but lacks warmth. Chopin group especially there was absence of color. a 40-WORD BRIDES SOON. The composition seemed too much of an experiment, wetl worked out, perhaps, but dull. The other numbers were Saint-Saens's quartet, a caprice on Danish and Russian airs, for piano, flute, oboe, and clarinet, and the Brahms G minor quartet for piano, violin, viola and ‘ceilo. ‘These, by their ‘brightness, leavened the lump, and each was well played. Maria Winetzkaja, mezzo soprano, gave a recital at Carnegie Hall last night that deservedly won favor by reason of the range and quality of her voice and her faculty of interpre- tation. In a group of folk songs of the Ukraina she was especially happy and only less so in a group of Eng- lish songs because of defective enun- ciation. Her programme, long and varied, was interesting for itsett and made doubly so by her intelligent and fascinating pronouncement of it. Rhea Silberta at the piano played gracious accompaniments, Emina Van de Zande, Belgian s0- prano, gave a recital at the Princess ‘Theatre yesterday afternoon. Her pro; comprised Flemish and modern Belgian and French songs, She prefaced the unfamiliar ones by translating the texts into English. There was compensation for some- thing of freshness that was lacking fm her voice in her admirable phras- ing and in her graphic interpreta- ‘thone.
