© THE NEW PLAYS o Grace George Delightful in “The ‘Ruined’ Lady” BY CHARLES DARNTON T was an essentially feminine comedy, “The ‘Ruined’ Lady,” written by if Frances Nordstrom and tastefully staged by Jossio Bonstelle, in which Grace George displayed her customary skill and unfailing charm last night at the Playhou De Maupassant, if he had written the play, would probably have called it “he Old Maid,” as he did when he gave the same subject a pathetic turn in one of his stories, Miss Nordstrom, with a modern understanding of the feminine mind, and taking her cue, pertmps, from Bernard Shaw, puts her woman on the truil of her man and so brings him up with a round turn. ‘Mais ip done by kindness, For twelve years, while “bringing up” the two hikiren of her dead brother, Ann Mortimer has made “Bill” Bruce feel sure of her, and at the same time her half-mile neighbor has enjoyed ull the ‘comforts of home at the Mortimer house. He is so comfortable that Ann, at the suggestion of a woman friend, goes to his house one night to rouse him ut of his easy chair, as it were, only to find after she has got caught in the rain, that be has gone to his club in town to stay overnight. Acting on the advice of « servant, she gets out of her wet, clothes and into his dress- ing gown and elippers. He returns unexpectedly, you may be sure, and after him come Ann's nephew, a second callow nightrider, and two chorus girls, who kick up a row that brings both Ann and Bill into the scene. In this way, Ann happily proctaims herself “ruined,” and she finally gucceeds in bringing Bill to the point of declaring his love for her. ‘Tho play is as elim-waisted us Miss George herself and suburban in style. But the Bnes are bright, as for example: “You don't believe in divorce?” “Well, it keeps people in circulation.” What the play lacks most of all ia situations) The only one that counts for dnything is dragged in by the joy-riding chorus girls. “Cutie” Bird is so indifferent to cigarettes that Mayene is moved to say: “If that dame had a heart it would be a cigarette one.” | ‘As for poor, negtected Ann, she nearly screams when Bill calls her | “Old girl,” slaps her on the back and pulls her ear. is compelled to} wait patientty for tim to realize that’she !s too charm) & woman to be| left with her hands folded in her lap. A courtship of ive years carries its own handicap, especially when the romantic interest of an audience in middle-aged lovers is to bo considered. It would be better, in my épinion, te make the probationary term five or six rs. The tension is felt in the| last act, when nothing but burlesque remains to eke out the little comedy, Yet “The ‘Ruined’ Lady” is always bright enough to be entertaining. Miss George was dolightful as the desperate heroine, engaging, tender and humorous, and keeping herself well within bounds except for a high- Pitched voice in the earlier part of her performance John Mittern played the slow-witted lover excelientl ’ and the cast gene did good work, | WOUNDED SOLDIERS IN NEED OF Medak Reorganized Re-employment Bu-| reau Finds Plenty to Do | for Disabled Heroes, Hundreds of former service men are making application { ployment at the reorgani yAoyment Bureau for E: in the old M, P, barracks at Pearl Street, Dr, Richard De Chairman of the new Re-Hmploy-| ment Committee, and Lieut.
