Kreisler Plays With Damrosch; |: Murphy’s Recital By Sylvester Rawling. ALTER DAMROSCH and the Symphony Society Orchestra began the New Year at Car negie Hall yesterday afternoon with @ concert that comprised only two works, both by Beethoven, the) “Eroica” symphony and the violin woncerto in D, with Fritz Kreisler te soloist. The beauty of the pro- gramme was enhanced by the man- ner of its pronouncement. Rarely has the orchestra appeared to better advantage. The first and the last movements of the symphony were Played with splendid spirit and the scherzo with ravishing finesse; although Mr. Damrosch, with a show of impatience of tardy comers that was justified, insisted upon complete silence before beginning the Funeral March, it has been delivered with greater impressiveness. Mr. Kreisler's entrance was the signal, as it has been at his @very appearance this season, for a pro- Icnged demonstration of respect and affection for him. This was re- doubled after his superb performance in the concerto. His was the playing of a master at the zenith of his pow- ers. What breadth and nobility of style! What charm, grace, finish and poise all co-ordinaling in his inter- pretation! Lambert Murphy, the tenor, gave a eighteenth century by Francis Hop- kinson, edited by Harold Milligan. There was a French group and an English group, and there were some old Irish airs, and for the end there was Geoffrey O'Hara’s Death." Mr. Murphy hi ‘There is no a follow- ing and he deserves it because of the quality of his voice, his good taste, and his earnestness, His accom- Panist at the piano was Charles Al-| bert Baker.
