Fokines Dance i At Metropolitan; Xmas ‘Messiah’ By Sylvesfer Rawling. NCE upon a time, not so very long ago, there was an Anna Pavlova who revealed to us ® form of dancing full of ethereal Brace and inspiring of poctic fancies. She was a product of a new Russian wohool of which Michel Fokine was the founder. At the Metropolitan Opera House last night Mr. Fokine himself appeared, assisted by his wife, Vera Fekina, prima ballerina of the Russian ballet. Morris Gest brought them to America this season to super- vise his production of “Aphrodite” at the Century Theatre. It was an- nounced that their appearance last tught was to be the only one here. The Tagcimating entertainment they fur- nished was enjoyed by a crowded and appreciative audience. The pity of it that they did not come to us a de- sade ago! For there is only one Vaviova and Mordkin, who was as- sociated with her, set a standard for men dancers that neither Nijinsky nor a Mr. Fokine has surpassed. were supported last niger pha &@ symphony orchestra, con- ducted by Josiah Zuro, in a pro- stemme entirely of Mr. Fokine's creation, The best of the individual rrambers was Mme. Salome of the seven veils, to Glazounow’s music, al- though more material, also was well resq ue, dow's vetting of a folk song, she was captivating. Mr. Fokine’s principal wumbers were Teherepin's “Bacchus” emi Glaszounow’s “Panderos.” FURRIERS 10 East 39th Street, NY WHERE COLUMBUS oe BROADWAY AT 66th STREET What Does Your Business Need? These young American women furnish an entertainment s0 naive and fascinating that it is uo pity they appear so seldam. They need not fear wearing out their wel- come. Their naturalness, their in- genuity, thelr real genius make an Irresistible combination. They de- sign their own costumes and proper- tics. “The Black Bowl,” a legend of Ruth Old Japan, by Cyril Boott and Yar and “The Little Visitor” were their most ambitious efforts; but in everything, large or small, that they did there was appeal. ‘They were ably assisted by Rosalind Fuller in folk songs and batlads, and by Lilian Jackson at the plano. Walter Damrosch léd the Oratorio Society Chorus at Carnegie Hall last might in the society's ninety-fourth annual Christmas performance of “The Messiah.” A more creditanle presentation of the work has not been given in revent years. Tho singing was smooth as well as sonorous, with a nice balance of the choirs, and there was effective leadership by Mr. Damrosch. The quartet was a dis- tinguished one, consisting of Frieda Hempel, soprano; Emma Roberta, contralto; Morgan Kingston, tenor, and Frederick Patton, bass. Frank Seely was the organist, and the or- chestral accompaniment was by the Symphony Society. There was a crowded house. Winifred Christie was heard in a Piano recital at Acofian Hall yester- day afternoon. She imparts indi- viduality to her playing, which is gracious, and @he appreciates on sentiment of such composers Chopin and Debussy without falling into sentimentality. A little more virtlity in her playing of Cesar Franck’s prgiuce, he choralo and fugue would no’ amiss. Miss Christie hag a fouowing and she de- serves it. The Now York Trio, Clarence Ad- ler, piano; Scipione Guidi, viottn and Cornelius Van Vieet, ‘cello, gave a second concert at Acolion Hall last night. The'programme consisted of bey two numbers, Beethoven's trio major, opus 70, and Tohaikov- one trio in A minor, opus 50, “To the Memory of a Great Artist,” but the latter is of great length. The organization already has made a Place for itself among lovers of this form of music because of its serious Purpose and the individual and col- lective artistic ability of its members.
