They are full of lustre, and are durable—the kind often found in halls, libraries and dens. Because of their soft dark cclors and dura- bility they are especially suitable for offices. They are in designs that cannot well be copied in domstic rugs. s Most of them are in perfect condition, but some show signs of use. In addition to the room sizes, and small sizes, there are some mats and’ saddle-bags that can be used on tables, and for decorative purposes. It is just such a lot as that the traveler finds in the rug countries when he goes to pick out his rugs first hand at their source of origin. It was a hot, sultry UB in April, 1918, when a dozen tired camels ambled slowly into Peshawur, the Indian military post on the front- ier of Afghanistan. % But our special representative—on an 86,000 mile merchandise-seeking journey—was full of energy. He met the caravan, and found to his great joy that it consisted of about 500 rugs —a prize caravan, in these days of Orienti] rug shortage. He looked over the rugs, bought them, paid cash-for them, and sent then to Bombay, where they were loaded on a boat for New York. And then— --England commandeered the beat, and sent it, cargo and all, with an emergency draft of soldiers, to Viadivistok. (That was in April, 1918.) And we heard no more of the 500 rugs until July, 1919, when we found them in London and, as soon as could be done, brought them aver to this side. It is the largest cargo of its kind that has come to New York in many years, and is in reality a wholesale stock offered direct to the public. We are offering these rugs as we bought them on the basis of prices 19 months ago, before the war laid its heavy hand on all merchandise. You will see the rugs when you come. You will feel their quality. You will see their beauty. You will compare the prices with what other Oriental rugs are selling for today. You will find them, we believe, just what we call them in the heading to this announcement—a surprise cargo that by its good fortune reaches New York just in time for Christmas. Every home that has Oriental rugs in it usually boasts a Bokhara or Beloochistan. For home or office use or for Christmas gifts the sale offers great possibilities. The sale will be held ‘in the Oriental Rug Shop on the Fourth Gallery of the New Building, facing the Bridge of Progress. Women’s Evening Frocks Respond to the holiday seasoh The next few weeks will wax gayer every day. Evening gowns are an indispensable part of the gaieties. Taffeta is the most important mate- rial of the mode, tor it lends itself so well to the bouffant lines which predominate in evening gowns. Prices . in taffeta frocks are surpris- ingly conservative, $25 to 95. At $25 is a blue taffeta frock puffed as to hips and netted as to sleeves, Draped lines are followed in another frock ~but draped lines of a bouftant nature. Silver circles enliven the frock, $39.50. Puffed effects prevail. They are achieved by the pannier (as in the frock sketched) by a circular putf at the waist: by loops or will-o'-the-wisp like ruffle. Black Chiffon Velvet . is undoubtedly the favorite tor formal evening gowns. When it comes in these charm- ing fashions, draped or puffed— when they are only B49.50 . when the holiday season ig pending— there is only one thing to do.
