Stadium Concert Promoters Give Dinner to Volpe By Sylvester Rawling. RNOLD VOLPE, violinist, pian- ist and conductor, has been as- Soolated with mustoal en- deavor in New York for some years. Never unmindful of the classics, he has sought to carry the messa of music beyond the sphere of the dilettante, the epicure and the luxuri- or ct to the masse: to proclaim the gos id ing influencos, to all the people. Aided by philanth . period by Alfred Seligman, he has conducted orchestras, trained aspir- ing youpg musicians to be pro- fessional players, and interested thousands who, before, were indiffer~ ent to the call of Euterpe. For two years his activities have been de- voted to summer concerts at he Stadium, where, thanks to the sup- port and assistance of Adolph Lew- sohn, the People’s Institute, and a host of music lovers, he has estab- lished his Symphony Orchestra, and with the aid of prominent soloists has made New York a commantiing music centre in summer, as, for long, it has been in winter, In appreciation of the work he has done at the Stadium, a omplimen- tary dinner was given to Mr. Volpe at the Hotel Astor last night. His z- | accomplishments were proclaimed by Andreas De Segurola, a most eff- cient toastmaster; ‘Mrs. Julian Ed- =| wards, Rubin Goldmark and Alfred F. Seligsberg, the latter speaking for Mr. Lewisohn, unavoidably ab- sent. A host of men and women musicians acclaimed both Mr. and Mrs. Volpe, the latter, most signally, having helped in the advancement of her husband's career. At the guest table was Leopold Auer, the master teacher of violinists, of whom, it may not be generally known, Mr. Volpe was @ pupil and to whom Mr, Volpe paid a touching tribute Samuel Gardner, the young New York violinist, played some of his own compositions and Nina Tara- sova, that remarkable singer of Rus- sian ballads, won fresh favor by eub- stituting for our own Marie Rappow, unable, at the last moment, to keep her engagement, It would heve amused, not to say shocked, the music ioving public to hear this gafh- ering of staid musicians ae lustily and rollickingly as could any cabaret audience. Stella Genova, joprano, new to New York, gave an “aria and song” recital at Acolian Hall fast nigtt. One of her numbers was “The Jewel Song” from “Faust’’ Woodman, Cadman, Roger Quilter, Debussy and Grieg compositions also were on her programme. She 3 accompanied a by Lawrence J. Munson at the piano, and by Conrad BE. Fosberg at the organ, and Mildred Jacobson, vio-~ linist, played “The Meditation” from “Thats.” assist Register early to-day, Booth® from'5 P.M. until 10.36 P.
