' t } ' ‘ Man and the Worlds: By Rev. Thomas B. Gregory Coppright, 1918, by The Pre Pubfishing Co, (The New York Rrening World). ‘Y the Old World I mean the WHOLE world, the planet on which we live along with all the other animated things. Worlds grow just like children and puppies and cabbages and teees, and just as the other things grow until they reach maturity and then bogin to age and finally dic, so it is with the worlds, ‘We know that DEAD worlds are wandering through the infinite spaces, ‘ewaiting their final transformation into the original nebulosity, and It is as certain as can be that the little old globe on which we happen to find ourselves is booked for the same fate. The only difference between planets and cabbages is the fact that the planets take a little longer to grow, mature and die, t Nor must we think that any part of the FREIGHT that is being borne & jong by the earth-car is going to survive the final “wreck of matter and # crash of worlds.” Homo sapiens, sometimes called Man, is in the sane box along with all the other sorts of freight. It is oartain that there was a time when human beings did not exist upon the earth, and it is equally certain that the time will come again when Earth will have no human tenants or any other type of Living creature. The Polar cold ts slowly but steadily advancing upon the equator, and the timg !s inevitably approach- ing when homo sapiens and all the other living creatures will have been frozen out of existence, so far as this planet is concerned. Physically speaking, Shakespeare was absolutely correct when he made Prospero exclaim to Miranda: “And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our Little life Is rounded with a sleep.” It is all very strange, so much effort on the part of the great Creative Energy, such world-building and lfe-buiiding, such inconceivable expendi- ture of power with such marvellous results—and all to be “rounded with a sleep,” all to end in death! . But therv is a great thought for us just here, the thought that Nature, like Man, her highest production, is a DUALITY. Nature is not ‘merely 'm~ sticks and stones, chemistry and gravitation, earth, air, fire and water with all of their physical combinations; she is all this PLUS MIND, ETHICS and the “THINGS OF THE SPIRIT.” Nature can well afford to fashton and then dtemantle mfllions of planets, it is merely a matter of 6o much physical stuff with which she may play as the kitten plays with the shadows, but Nature cannot afford to commit SUICIDE, which she would do if she destroyed the MORAL and SPIRITUAL INSTINCTS WHICH WELL UP tn THE HIGHER SELF OF MAN. Man ts as much a part of Nature as a cabbage ts, but he is her highest part, her innermost, immortal part, over which the laws that govern the mere STUFF of the universe have no dominion. With her left hand Nature forms the suns and planets of the boundless spaces, together with all that they contain, including even the majestic and God-like body of Man, and then with amazing ruthlessness destroys them, while with her right hand she prints upon Man’s SOUL the convie- Yon of the moral and spiritual verities which are eternal. ve 2 ou se oo an Meo ye ons Glimpses Into New York Shops you cannot crochet one of those; Among them are the old-fashionnd pretty filet sweaters that all the|or yellow, deep pinks that look quaint girls are now wearing you can|and old pretty blues. HROUGH the tangle of tall grass and Wild plants Romp and Rufit trudged, hoping to get beyond the fleld and to find thelr way home, But they had been made into wee creatures by the indignant Thimble-nimble and their little legs could not make the eame progress as when they were full-sised kiddies, At last, weary and some- what {ll at ease, they sank down upon A grasslosa spot and leaned thelr tired little heads against a small stone (it seomed very large to them now) and prepared to sleep, They wore near to the edge of a pond and it was nice and cool, Mash! Ripple-ripple! Lap, tp, !" said the water of the pond as @ big goose alighted upon its surface and went paddling around the edge. Romp tnd Rufit, startled, popped over the top of the stone to see what the commotion was, They looked right into the sharp eyes of the goose, who said: “Ah! a new kind of insect. I wonder if they will taste good? Surely one mouthful could not hurt me." Then, turning to Rufit: “Til try you first. You look harmless enough. I don’t think you could say ‘Boo’ j to @ goose.” The feathery neck curved lower, managed to say “Boo!” Feathers besprinkled the ground, webbed feet gave way to boots and the one-time goose, was a quaintly dressed boy, who made off toward the west in the twinkling of an eye, But not before Romp had jumped into his pocket and Rufit had taken up his place astride the quill in his, hat.
