When the transport Susquehanna docked at Pier 15, Hoboken, this morning with 1,388 officers and men, the 819th Engineers let out a whoop that was echoed by the 319th Engi- neering train. For they had busted army regulations wide open and praught “Monte” back from France with them. When the 319th Engineers was formed at Camp Tremont, California, an admirer of the Montana men pro- sented to them as @ mascot a two- weeks’ olf black bear cub weighing twelve pounds. They named him “Monte.” Just before the men embarked from Philadetphia the outfit received omers to leave all animals ashore. “Monte” was packed into a case and labelled “band instruments.” reached England safely, but he had grown 80 that he could not be car- ried in the band case.
