McIntyre in the Court of General Seasions. ‘The Court gave instructions that the matter be taken up with the United States District Attorney here and with the Secretaries of the War and Navy Departments at Washing- The case in hand was that of a woman known as Gladys Palmer. On the night of March 12 she was ar- rested at Broadway and 47th Street by Detectives Wheelwright ‘and Serger, who were wearing national uniforms, One was dressed as an army officer, the other as an enlisted man of the navy. On the testimony of the detectives the woman was sentenced by Magis- trate McGeehan to thirty days in the workhouse. Her lawyer, Samuel J. Siegel, appealed to Judge McIntyre to set aside the sentence. “Thé@e disguised policemen,” said Mr. Giegel, “created a scandalous scene by virtonlly dragging this young woman from a restaurant and dnto @ taxicab. They then appeared against her and charged that in the cab her conduct was improper.” Judge McIntyre said: “If that is so, this business of de- basing and degrading the unfform of the army and the navy should be stopped. It is about time to stop the whole practice of the police in using such uniforms. I do not regard such masquerading @s legitimate police business. It lessens respect for the uniform.
