Prime cattle were advanced ym 20 to 22% cents, and hinds and ribs were jumped from 23 to %4 cents to 26% to 28% cents a pound, Z The other two meats singled out by the cattle raisers, veal and lamb, ‘were increased in price 2 to 4 cents a pound, lamb selling at 82 and 33 cents and veal at 33 to 34 cents per pound wholesale. No opportunity is dost by the large packers to let one cent escape from them that can be squeezed out of the consumer under one pretext or another, This recent move of the packers in artificially increasing prices this week is justified neither under the laws of supply demand nor any other sound business exigency. An extensive trip last Saturday through the leading meat markets in the upper west side did not reveal lany great advance in the retail prices. Some of the smaller markets that waited until Thursday and Fri- day morning to get their supplies bad to pay the increased price. Others purchased their beef in advance and these were not compelled to advance thelr prices this week. Most of the markets were well patronized and gen- erally admitted doing a fair business, but they expect that when they ad- vance their prices this week the consumers will use less meat.
