Rothstein, the gambler, were handed down to-day by the February Grand Jury which has been for four months investigating a shooting affair at No. 301 West 57th Street on Jan. 19, 1919, Judge Crain issued a bench warrant for Rothstein's arrest and detectives were sent to his home and to Belmont Park race track searching for him. It is charged in the indictment that Rothstein shot Detectives John J) Walsh and John McLaughlin of In- spector Henry's staff while the de- tectives were trying to break into an apartment at the West 57th Street address, The affair created much comment at the time, but there ap- peared to be some police indifference about who did the shooting, and tt was only continual and persistent work on the part of Assistant District Attorney James Smith which brought Nit, nowever, because there cams an urgent need for a man capable of re~ constructing ports. Then the door was opened and the two detectives and other policemen arrested more than twenty men, in- gluding Rothstein, on # gharge of mambling.
