HE EVENING WORLD, SATURDAY, APRIL 12, John Barrymore Seen | As a New Hamlet; | Lionel as the King Genius of the Brothers Proved in “The Jest’! Suggests Further Possibilities Likely to Come True in Another Year. | By Charles Darnton. O T of the theatrical muck of things comes the hope of a new Hamlet. In the next year John Barrymore should have his fingers on the | skull of Yorick, and Lionel Barrymore should be playing the King. | This is @ prediction worthy of consideration. | Booth acted Hamlet as no one since his time bas played it. For one thing, I remember the play of his hands—slender, expressive hands that | told their own story. John Barrymore brings much of this expression to | “The Jest.” He is sensitive to his fingertips, even though he might put on boring gloves with the next man he met in the street The American dramatist who took “The Jest" from the Italian is too | fine, too modest to have his name figure in the advertising columns. When his translation of the play scored a hit in New York he was lying on a| doctor's cot far away from the Broadway world. I have given my word not to “give away" his name, but you may guess it if you happen to think Liowew BARR YMoRe. as B AREY AN JRE BROTHERS IN THEIR NEW PLAY, “THE But the main point is tt in another year, and that Lione! is merely extravagant melodrama reflecting the age in which men made themselves the spendthrifts of life. Yet it is melodrama that makes it force felt so strongly that people who go to the theatre are held by it. I believe that John Barrymore can play Hamlet and that he will play 4t. Lionel Barrymore may be counted upon to give a fine performance as the King. The Ophelia might easily be within the powers of Ethel Barry more—but we cannot ask too much of one family Once again, the Barrymore brothers hove proved themselves to be the surprise of the thatrical world.
