Written Exclusively for The Evening) World. No farmer ever got righ producing milk. No city man, no matter what his capital or fortune, and selling ever succeeded producing milk with| paid help without loss, For the past} four years the farmer who made milk for the New York market simply worked himself and wife and children for less wages than other industries For the most part much of the} work was performed without pay. It} was the only way milk could be pro- duced at the price paid by the Milk rust, On the other hand, numerous for- tunes have been made in the distribu- tion of rifllk, and in the converting of it into condensed milk and other by- products. It is possible for a dealer handling 250 cans of milk a day to accumulate more money in a year than the average dairy farmer makes in a lifetime. Besides, the farmers | furnish the capital not only for the production, but for the business of distribution as well. The milk farm- er’s credits to the milk dealers in the: City of New York will exceed $5,000,- paid 000 for every day in the year. MAY NOT WATER THE MILK, BUT DOES WATER STOCK. We have a State law against the watering of milk, but no law against the watering of stocks in the com- panies that deal in milk. After pay- ing big salaries and heavy overhead expenses, the watered stocks pay big dividends. Somo three or four years back one of the big companies ad- vertised to sell an issue of its 7 per cent. preferred stock to the public and the statement was made tn these advertisements, published in the city press, that the earnings on an equal issue of the common stock was suffi- cient to pay eight times the dividend on the preferred stock, Since that time the stock has been further in- | creased We are told over and over again that there is no Milk ‘Trust in New York, Perhaps not. It all depends on the definition of a trust. We know that for long years the price paid o} mer by one dealer was the price paid all farmers all the dealers, know thi ged char one cons\ ‘ price charged dealers, the price reduced the p When one dea to the consumer, creased the cost to the consumers at the same time. For all we know there may not be a Milk Trust that would satisfy the legal definition of a trust, but we do know that if a Milk Trust did exist it would do the things our organiza+ tion of mill dealers have been doing for forty years, up to and including the present time, AFFECTS BUSINESS, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL AFFAIRS. If there is anything worse a trust could do to us, goodness save us from a real Milk Trust These milk dealers, form probably one of the strongest combinations of men and money in the world, Their stocks are held by some of the most powerful estates in the country. They influence business, social and political affair: Their |members contribute regularly to a charitable organization for the poor, and the agents of the organization She just added water te Aunt Jemima Such fluffy, delicious cakes—he said he could eat twe dexen! eA Don't experiment — start his day right Don’t risk failures that disappoint your husband— you can so easily give him the breakfast that other men love! It extended all over the State. Farmers delivered milk with- out interference to favoerd big deal- ers for years, When they became cerns, the milk was condemned and the small dealer fined. ‘The big deal- ers used plants without interference for years. When they passed to small dealers the plants were in spected and condemned. One such seventeen violations filed against tt. A small dealer in Brooklyn refused to sel] to one of the bigger concerns.
