{ MILKRAISENETS SCHOOLS CALL CHILDREN, WASHINGTON, Nov. 18—An active oa | 4? 000 IN EXTRA campaign to secure the return to school U ‘of thousands of children who have been drawn into industry during the war letters had been sent to all State om- cials responsible for the enforcement of } emergency has been launched by the Children's Bureau of the Department of | Labor. Ar announcement to-day said John J, Dillon, Writing for Evening World, Protests Against Profiteering. By John J. Dillon | (Written Exclusively for The Eve- ning World—First of a Sories of Articles.) Two weeks azo Director Hoover of the Federal Food Commission ac- cused the dairymen of New York Btate as profiteers because they de- manded a price for milk during Nov- ember to cover their estimated cost Mr, Hoover asserted that the farmer's price plus the dealer's charge for dis- tribution would bring the cost to the consumer of 17 cents a quart. He insisted this would put milk beyond of production without profit. the reach of the poor children of, New York, and react on producers in emalier consumption. He insisted that producets should reduce their + price even if it meant a loss for the time being in order that the city might have 16 cent milk. Feeling that the request was a war fheasure the farmers complied and @greed to accept $3.81 a hundred Pounds for milk instead of $4.01, the q@timated cost to produce it. Now that the war is over and with Bo increase to the farmer, Mr. Hoover abandons the poor children in whom he previously expressed an interest, and allows the dealers an extra cent a quart for distribution, and makes the price of milk 17 cents ® quart to consumers in quart bottles | and 22 cents a quart when delivered in pint bottles. If the family is 60 Poor that it can afford only @ pint of milk, it must pay at the rate of 22 cents a quart for its half portion. If the family means will furnish use of a quart of milk daily, the cost is 17 cents per quart. If you happen to be a little vain or proud; or if you have a tender in- terest in a child or an invalid, and or- der a pint of grade A to have what you suppose to be the best, you pay at the rate of 24 cents a quart for your pint of milk. The difference in the two grades is not always easy to determine. They frequently come out of the same can. The Food Administration man tells us that the present increase to the consumer was wholly due to the in- creased wages paid the drivers. Let Us examine this claim, The ¢sti- mated average daily receipt of milk in New York is 2,400,000 quarts. One cent a quart increase is $24,009 Gaily to the dealers. About 40 per cent. of the supply is delivered in bot- tles, or 960,000 quarts. Estimating the @elivery of each driver at only 490 quarts a day, it would require 2,409 men, and their increase of approxi- mately one dollar a day amounts to $2,400 a day to be charged against their increased allowance of $24,000 a day. In other words, for each dime they pay the drivers they collect a dollar from: the consumers of New York. Dealers delivering milk in New York at a profit during the first two weeks of November before this extra bonus was allowed them. Many of them were then offering a premiuia| over the fixed price to the producer in| order to get a fuller supply, and they | were making profits on that. Now| they are allowed an extra windfall of $354,000 on sixteen days’ trade, This fs over and above the profits of the first half of the month. It is ijttle wonder that the dealers @re satisfied to have the Food Ad- mMinistration fix prices, Any of us would like Government regulation of | Prices if we could be the Government.
