STANDARD WAGE. | INAL WAR WORK, PLAN OF WHOM Stabilizing Prices and Careful Checking May Follow Com. pensation Move. WASHINGTON, Sept. 20.—As one atep in stopping the ever upward ‘ trend of prices and wages, the Gov- ernment proposes soon to set a stand- ard wage in each line of war work. At the same time a more careful checking of prices will be attempted and in so far as possible standard or | fair price lists will be enforced. J ‘The standardization of wages prob- ably will be undertaken in a few ‘weeks through Presidential proclama- | tion, By this means a ship riveter in Newark, N. J., will get the same wage as the riveter at San Francisco and so on through the Government and pri- vate war work factories of all kinds. Heretofore prices have risen and! wages have been boosted to meet! them. This process appeared con- tinuous. Now, it is proposed to standardize the wage, and if possible | stabilize prices. Price fixing may have to be extended. In any event, it 4s likely that the Government will tell producers that they cannot havo Taw materials unless they sell their goods at a fair price. — >.
