TOS Cask ———_— ve —— Albert Beraud, the Mew Jersey Runner, Now Home on a Short Furlough, Has Been Given Ex- traordinary Honors by French Government. rt, Y Pree Putting Oo Nes York Rrening Ward.) VERY few days some new story comes out to show the part athletes are taking in the great wer. Now it ta the story of Albert Beraud Of New Jersey, who is home from the fighting front on a short furlough. Beraud was « quarter and half-mile runner on the track team of BL Peter's Coliege when tho war broks out. He was of French descent, as hie name suggests. He was a tall youngster, strongly built, smooth faced, smiling. He has passed through Buch adventures a» come to only one man in many militon: ch desper- ate fighting as none know but those who have faced death a hundred times in the most furiously waged war in ali the history of the world. Albert Beraud has come home still smiling youngster, wearing a amall k mustache that makes bim look Mquite the typical French soldier, « umber of war medals and a French uniform of dark blue. He has been ven extraordinary honors by the inch Government. He wours the medal of the Legion .<@f Honor, the Cross of War, and four “gpecial distinctions. He is one of only ree private soldiers in France who are of the Legion of Honor. He ts the only American soldier so decorated. One or two other Americans have re- yeetved the Legion of Honor decora but not for daring on the batti merely for giving the French a few million dollars to help them win the war. So Albert Beraud’s decora- tions are unique. Beraud went to France two years ago and enlisted in the- Colonial Regiment, Marines of Moroceo, That regiment has a war record that ts worth passing mention. In all, since the beginning of the war, 86,000 men have been on its muster rolls. Im- agine what that means! In some des- erate battles it has lost 90 per cent. of its entire strength in killed, wound~ 4 and missing. Of the Original Muster roll only five men are left! Beraud was not one of the five, of course. He didn’t go over to France until about a year after the beginning ef the war, But his decorations show that he has seen enough fighting to PU) the lifetimes gta dozen men, ERE 1 the story of one of the exploits for. which Beraud was decorated, He was detalled in the first wave of ‘gm attack. With his comrades hy made his way down a connecting ‘rench to the point where they wer scheduled to go over the top, There Were shells bursting everywhere, for the Germans were expecting the com- assault and were trying to smap) n fore it could start. Machine gun bursts swept the parapet of the trench where they half crawled along, care- fully keeping under cover, They reached the place where they were to leave the treuch to attack. The sig: was given and the Frene soldiers swarmed out from the trench to start across the way toward the Germans, [ut hardly were their heads and shoulders above the ground Mine when they were struck by the Machine gun fire. Beraud, elimbing up, was knocked down again by bpdies of men that were literally hurled back into the teneb., He crawled Yrom under the bodies and Jooked around. Overhead a lifeless Jeg or two. @ limp and shattered arm, overhung the edge of the trench, and the machine gun bullets ripped and * tore every thing to shreds “This is no place for me,” thought Beraud. He crouched low and ran along until he thought he was beyond the machine gun fire, then quickly peered over the edge of the trench Instantiy his steel helmet was struck from his head by a machine gun bullet. There's a scar on the side of bis forehead now. Dazed, he turned and groped for the helmet, replacing it mechanically, Peering above the jarapet again he saw the nearest rman machine gun, aweeping from @ide to side in a slotted defense wor, shooting oui @ level sheet of flam ‘As it swept to the right, away from iim, he scrambled from the trench id crawled to a shell hole a few ards out. When the machine gun vd swept past him and back again he scrambled ahead to another shell hole, keeping as iow as possible.
