THE NEW PLAYS “Chu. Chin Chow” . Glorious Triumph | BY CHARLES DARNTON. b Sanaa enn ananaonmmestatecpemnn TWWRONE DOWER Ano FLORENCE REED iw°CHU CHIN CHOWe VERYTHING that an Arabian Night's dream could possibly conjure E up was realized at the Manhattan ¢ . House last night in “Chu Chin Chow,” brought over from London by Elllott, Comstock and Gest and produced on a scale of such magnificence that it sets a new ndard for gargant’ in spectacle. New York has never seen anything like it, & "Chu Chin Chqw” aclileved a gl ET SSE ous triumph with splendors th beauty Henry Dixey “came into his aniaged the imme audience. T own" agin completely as the wine- so-called “musical tale loving jester All Baba, capering about with all the lightness and charm that is the old tale of th the character demanded, Kate Con- given new, interest by Oscar Asche and appropriate music Norton. The lavish manner in which it is produced makes it something more than extravaganza. In its magic there is the touch of the artist: The swiftly changing scenes are not only gorgeous color-schemes, but they possess beauty that charms the eye and satisfies the imagination. Both scenery and costumes are such bizarre works of art that the effect is nothing less than superb. To watch Abu Hasan, who had a sinister fancy for calling himself Chu Chin Chow as he went his profiteer- ing way with a band of robbers worthy of even Mr. Hoover's atten tion, was to see Bagdad of a thousand years ago in all its picturesqueness, if not more than it ever actually dis- played. From palace to cave won- thoughtfulness, ratsed their volces in constip song 8o that the groans of the dying couldn't be heard. The Oriental richness of the first act reached its clim market scene, with w ors, 80 to say, trotted out for inspec- | tion. This is the scene that will be the talk of the town—mark my word! It was like a great living picture, ‘There were smaller pictures framed in the centre of the stage that gave) w variety to the exhibition and offered bits of delightful comedy. The cave, stored with its rich plunder, left nothing to the imagination--not ev @ coal mine. “A mean etreet in Bag- dad” was the runway of savages uttering wild cries, and in harem, wiik stall, bizarre a orchard color caught the eye and went to the head, It was all intoxicating. Incidentally, there waa a fashion) whow im little Old Bagdad that will make big New York open its eyes. Tho ballets were a distinotive fea- ture of the spectacle, with Katherine Galapta figuring as a dancer of skill, grace and originality. Most sen sational of all were the “desert dan- vers," performance with wild abandon weirdly beautiful ballet. The acting was equally suited to the spirit of the play. Tyrone Power, as the robber shayk, niade the so called Chu Chin Chow a towering, terrifying figure, and at the time never became #0 « rend Ghat he gave himself to ranting. In fact he was @ thoroughly weil-behaved out by Frederick | s in the slave Bathing ts more essential to their beu en of all col-| who flung themselves into the The spirit of the cave was suggested in a same om, acted amusingly and pudgy little slave Francis J.
