Agitation for the destruction of ps throughout the country, ts to stop enforcement of | The Dairy Cows Must Not Be Slaughtered! HE 590,000 dairy cows on our farms are in danger, and so your milk supply is in danger. Dairy cows bring a high price for meat and they must be sold for meat if they can’t be made to pay as milkers. The College of Agriculture of the state made investigations in thirty-eight counties and found that the great herd is decreasing at the rate of 71,000 cows a year. Meanwhile, there were 26% less female calves raised. The reasons given for the slaughter was scarcity of labor, high prices of feed and low prices for milk. To Save the Dairy Herds, You Must Use Milk Freely Unless more milk is used—unless you understand that the milk producers on the farms are selling their milk as low as possible, then the dairy industry of the East will go the way of the sheep industry, which has been practically destroyed because it was not profitable. During October we dairymen will receive for Grade B milk testing 3.6% butter fat, 7.18 cents a quart. It will cost us over 6.97 cents a quart to produce this milk. Our profit, then, will be about 2/10 of a cent per quart. Some people think that cows live on grass and forage. Asa matter of fact we have to buy a large part of the feed for our cows. In the last twelve months, feed has gone up over 60%, just the same as your flour and your meat have gone up, and for the same reason. Farm labor has gone up over 33% and other expenses have gone up 50%. Children Simply Must Have Milk Their growth, their very lives depend upon it. Every child should consume in one way or another at least a quart of milk a day. Grown ups consume too little milk. Business men should drink more milk at lunch and cut down on meat and egg dishes. Housewives should save money by cutting down on the pur- chases of meat and eggs and put more milk onthe table, either to be drunk or in puddings, soups, breads, cakes, custards, etc. Mr. Hoover Says, ‘‘Do Not Waste Milk”’ It should be bought freely and every bit of it should be consumed. The cream and butter furnishes energy, and skimmed milk and buttermilk are real foods, because they build up the body and safeguard health. We, the dairymen of the state, pledge ourselves to keep down our selling prices as low as possible month by month. Our books, our cost of production and our selling prices are always open to the public. Each of the 42,000 members of the Dairymen’s League are spending a few cents a day for this advertising, to lay before the consumers the vital facts about milk production; the cost of its production and the value of milk as a food.
