Arranges a) Series of Meets in Order to Help Athletés, Particularly En- listed Men, to Keep in Perfect) _ Condition. fy Copyright. 1017, by The Pree Mubtishing Co, (The New York Evening World.) ERE'S a sensible idea. New York: Athletic Club sent aut the following notice Realizing that the curtail- ment of athletics all along the line would be a setback for the game, and with a view of encouraging the athletes, and particularly the men enlisted in any branch of the National ser- vice, te keep themselves in perfect condition by plenty of active com- petition, the New York Athletic Club bas arranged for a series of events on the track and field, in swimming and in rowing, to be contested each Saturday after- noon during the season at Trav- ers Island. The range of events ia a large one so as to give every branch of sport an opportunity and to give the men some induce- ment to keep in training. The events will be open to all regis- tered athletes, and particular at- tention will be paid to men who are enlisted or who will be called by the draft, with a view of se- curing thelr entries, The Amateur Athletic Union and the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen rules will gov- ern all contests. A nominal entry fee will be charged for each event, and the fee will be returned to the men who actually compete, No entry fee will be charged for any man enlisted in any branch of the service, be it the army, navy or National Guard, provided that they represent and the entry ts approved by a commissioned of- ficer of the organization that they represent. Silver medals will be awarded for first place and a bronze medal for spcond place in each event contested, The first of the competitions will be held Saturday, June 16, and the events to be contested will be the 100-yard run, half-mile run, one-mile walk and Javelin The has throw, IM DUNCAN, the famous discus J thrower and holder of world's records, has volunteered and is now in active service. He is at Fort Totten, with the Coast Defence Ar- titery Corps, If the shells run out Jim can toss a few weights in the direction of the enemy, which would probably do a lot of damage. Jim was a “fence bus when he was throwing the discus, They never had the fences far enough away fro the ring to avoid his long throws, BOXER ¢ tly died in the ring in Australia, after re. ceiving what appe to be a Light blow on the jaw. Fuctor WAGNER NEEDS EXERCISE “If Hans Can’t Cure the Pirates, Then Jimmy Callahan Had Better Wire for a Pulmotor”—“A Soggy Ter- | race Again Cancelled the Yanks and Indians.” By Arthur (‘‘Bugs’’) Baer. | (Copyright, 1917, by the Press Publishing Co. (The New York Evening World). | O you remember those old-fashioned pug dogs with curly tails?) They are as extinct now as the Fed League, but around 1890 no American home was legal without one of those ochre-colored pug dogs limping around the works, They tolled not, neither did they spin. All they did was Some of them had nails longer than a Mongolian mandarin. If they tried to gallop on a cement sidewalk they looked like they were on stilts. You couldn't take ‘em out for the air because their natis rattled like a set of number ten false teeth in a number six face. This colossal presence of nails was caused by a monumental absence of exercise, Which Is all that is the matter with Hans Wagner. He didn’t help the Pirates much yester- day because he had been bumming so much that his nails got long. Wait until he wears ‘em down to Infleld size again and watch that old bird. If Hans can't cure the Pirates, then Jimmy Callahan had better | wire for a pulmotor. If Hans can’t get ‘em back with artificial | respiration, the Pirates are extinct. i} Pfeffer pfitched for Robby yesterday and slappfed the Pfirates down easily.
