e THE NEW PLAYS ° “The Very Minute” A Timely Temperance Sermon BY CHARLES DARNTON N coming out of the hospital into the hands of David Belasco at the Belasco Theatre last night, Arnold Daly again proved himself to be his own master by acting with the intelligence that is his birthright, and, more- over, by making a curtain speech that left Mr, Belasoo comparatively mute. What Mr. Daly experienced in the hospital is of no interest to the stage, yet he held it for five or ten minutes talking of surgeons and things while “The Very Minute” waited. ‘The play is a timely andan intelligent rance rmon, Its young au- John Meehan, is at least clear sighted. He sees the danger of drink © Drilliant minds. It 1s no concern of his that the ordinary man gets @runk and tumbles into the gutter. ‘He ts not a Billy Sunday howling at mankind to make a home run to Paradise. With his first play he seeks to eave the higher intellect from the burning of alcohol. Fine minds are too raro in this world to be destroyed by the bottle. Now, this is all very well theory—but it doesn't make & ola) Th spite of his facility, Mr. Meohan hes not learned how to write dm- matically, and in producing “The Very Minute” Mr, Belagco evidently has his keen eye on the temperance * wave now sweeping over the coun- try. A certain power associated with “new thought” is also emphasized in the proceedings. All this might prove @timulating enough if there were an Interesting story to force it into at- tention, or if the characters appealed warmly to the sympathies of an au- @ience. The trouble with the play is that it is mostly talk. “The Very Minute” offers little more than a rather interesting study| Yet it is not until the} of a drunkard. I tried ‘“‘Fruit-a-tives” and it was the only medicine that really did me good. Sometimes & man drinks in the hope of forgetting the Woman who has forgotten him; or he may try to escape from misery that has come to him in another way. in this case the unfortunate victim of alcohol is left to say—and in the jast act, mind youl—that he gave so many hours to study he felt the need of whiskey to keep him at his task. Nonsense! This feeble attempt of ‘rancis Cramnor to bully hinself into @ college presidency, not so much to save the pride of his father as to play @ vengeful trick upon the emug ly respectavie trustees, is too trivial to command interest, It is all very well for Francis to indulge in vart- ous diatribes against common hy- Pocrisy, conventional virtue and the Injustice of God in affitcting man, with a weakness that condemns him, but “The Very Minute” fails to stand the test of common, sense.
