THE EVENING WORLD, THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1917. * “The Poor Fool’’ At Comedy Theatre By Charles Darnton. CCASIONALLY the Washington Square Players do something worth doing and do it well. Aa the second play of their new bill at the Comedy Theatre last night they fave “The Poor Fool,” by Hermann Bahr, author of “The Concert"—it I must identify him—and thereby won Profound respect for their work. In taking this play from the Ger- man, Mrs. F. B. Washburn followed both an intelligent and artistic in- jstinet, for “The Poor Fool” ts a play far above the level of Broadway, It soars to heights of imagination aot reached by the ordinary writer for the stage, In It is to be found an Idealism that might well make the tired busi- ness man wish he were dead, | In spite of all we may think of the Germans, we must grant they ha’ imaginations. It is @ fine, though Possibly morbid, imagination that Bahr has given “The Poor Fool.” One brother is practical and the head of a family, while another has a greater vision. The line between sanity and insanity, for that matter, is so finely drawn that only the most sensitive of human beings can recognize the! danger signal that Nature flashes from the dark turnings of life. | In this instance Bahr has taken a) man who dives into the depths in 6rder to bring up the sun so that his fellowmen may seo it, The tragic part of it is that Hugo loses his mind | in the process, But he is a sublime| figure, whilo his elder brother,, who has given himself to the dull, every- day routine of the world, remains a| poor fool. You are left to a philoso- phy that is as old as time. Only the angels can make it clear in tri- umphant trumpet-notes, “The Poor Fool" took first honors at the comedy last night, For-| tunately, the play was acted in a manner that left no room for critl-| cism. In fact, Jose Ruben, as Hugo, gave one of the finest, performances that has been seen a New York stage in many a nig! He proved himself to be than an artist, Arthur BE, Hobl wa excellent as the dying brother, em- bittered by his experiences in a hard world; Marjorie Vonnegut acted the daughter with dutiful simplicity, and Edward Balzerit displayed intelligent restraint, “Plots and Playwrights," by ra-| ward Massey, proved to be little moro! than a cheap travesty on cheaper) Broadway playsmiths, and it was rather badly acted. |The skyward couplets into Which Moliere’s farce} “Sgunarelie” was translated by Philip] Moeller served to spoil the fun of the| thing, ally when one of the characters was led to say “I'll get her yet." It was Moliere reduced to Broadway slang—nothing more, But The Poor Fool” was played so well, especially on the part of M. most sensitive, For Golfing, Riding, Motoring and for All Field Athletics. ‘An elastic back and abdominal sup- porting belt for men which will help to reduce your stomach, increase your lung expansion, improve your figure, give you greater warmth and added comfort; while its unusual flexibility permits the utmost freedom of movement.
