Samuel Gompere, prestdent of the American Federation of Labor, told the Public Service Comission to- day that organiezd labor is unalter- ably opposed to the plan proposed by the Commission for Compulsory Ar- bitration of Labor Disputes or transit lines and other public utilities by « wage board backed with legislative powers. President Gompers appeared at a hearing held to obtain tife views of labor men, employees of larg forees and others qualified to speak. In introducing Mr. Gomere:Chairman Straus, of the Commission, called him “the most experienced labor man in the country.” “If the legislation you contemplate is enacted,” said President Gompers, ‘and the members of this Commis- slon could sit as an official body twenty years from now as they are gathered here to-day, they would be heartily sorry they ever sponsored a compulsory arbitration jew. I think 1 am voicing the sentitnent of all honest workmen when I declare that legislation on labor questions always bas @ very strong tendency to cir- cumscribe the rights of workers. “Employ have the privilege of organtaztion under the present con- ditions, and to permit legislation such as that proposed by your body would merely serve to weaken the force of unions that the workmen painstak- ingly have built up in long years of ceascless struggle. “Lrdividual freedom may be well |enough in theory, but the working- man standing alone can accomplish nothing. The compulsory arbitration of disputes under the conditions out- lined by Chairman Straus would, J fear, be only the entering wedge—the forerunner for depriving the workers of their right to protest against un- fair conditions and to enforce their Protests by the only weapon within their power to use. “No labor laws do away with the el nt of human nature. Leg'sla- tive’ enactment will not change human nature. Throughout all his- tory, from the time of the French Revolution until to-day, legislation on questions of labor has done nothing | more than to work toward the cir-! cumscribing of the rights of the ‘ workers.” The prices have been warrant a speedy elim from stock and thus incoming assortments. After beating his wife Mary into {nsensibility with a hammer in their home In the apartment house at No. 1876 Clintog Avenue, the Bronx, where he had been employed as jant- tor, James Griffin ran to the roof of the building to-day and hurled him- self to the ground, five stories below. They have four children: Lawrence, thirteen; Alice, ten; May, eight, and Dorothy, 7. The tragedy followed a quarrel which started after Mrs. Griffin had sent the children to Public School No. 44, a block away, | tary The rear of the home of Otis Fowler, at No, 741 Bast One Hundred and Seventy-sixth Street, overlooks the Griffin apartment. Fowler heard @ crash of glass to-day and, Jooking toward the Griffin home, says he saw Griffin seize his wife by the throat, back her against the wall and rain blows on her head with a hammer. Fowler ran for a policeman. He found one at the corner. As they were hur- rying back they saw Griffin leap from the roof. Griffin and his wife were taken to the hospital in the same am- bulance.
