wf) Mr. Beully ~ MITOHEL ORDERS” | REPORT ON WASTE € OF OFFICE SPACE Wallstein Told to Investigate Costly Use of Room in Municipal Building. Commissioner of Accounts Wall- tein has been instructed by Mayor _# Mitchel to ascertain just how much Space is being wasted in the Muni- cipal Bullding, It has been repeated- ly shown by The Evening World that if the various city departments were Properly reapportioned, many thou- sand square feet would be saved and the city spared the necessity of pay- ing large sums for office rental in Private bulldings, Commissioner Wallstetn'’s investt- gators already have learned that when the Municipal Building was erected at a cost of over $13,000,000 it was expected that practically all the city departments with the excep- tion of the Health, Police and Schoo! Departments would find ample quar- ters there. When the bullding was opened, however, city departments had little trouble in getting much More room than they had been al-| lowed before. The result was that) all original calculations as to the amount of space each department! was to occupy were rendered useles: What is regarded as one of the most | Glaring Instances of wasted space ds the allotment of 7,853 square feet for & proposed women's lunch room. The original plan contemplated beautifully fitted out dining rooms and retiring rooms and al! appointments one might expect to find in a women's club. Besides giving the women omploy- es of the city the space for the res- taurant rent free it was planned to| | equip the restaurant. The employees were to keep It going. For some r von the restaurant has not ized. After the Wallstein in 's complete their task and report to the Mayor, it is not likely It will, Figuring on an estimated value of | | f the city permits | $1.80 @ square foot its women employees free floor space in the Municipal Building it will b making them a gift of $14,000 a year and at the same time paying that much rent for city oMfces that now can’t get into the Municipal Bullding. ‘The Board of Coroners, which occu- plea valuable space on the xocond and | fifth floors, is to go out of existence | | with the expiration of 1917.
