Samuel Barkin, president of the Essex Walst Company, was placed on trial before Justice Kapper in the Criminal Branch of the Supreme Court in Brooklyn to-day on a chargo of manslaughter, the trial being the first on several indictments which re- sulted from the fire in the Diamond Candy Company factory at No. 288 North Sixth Street, Williamsburg, on Nov. 6, 1916, Eight girls and four men were burned to death and the prosecution contends some of them were trapped behind a door which had been locked in deflance of the State Labor De- partment’s regulations, Mrs. Celia Diamond and Edward L. Diamond, the owners of the place, Samuel Simon, their agent, and Barkin, who was president of the waist company which occupied the third floor, were jointly indicted, on charges of manslaughter tn having by culpable negligence caused the deaths of Rose Goldman, Irene Totta and Abraham Wallik. When the defendants were called for trial to-day their lawyer, Meter Steinbrink, demanded separate trials for all of them and Assistant District Attorney Everett Caldwell selected Barkin as the first. Two counts in charge him with manslaughter in the first and second degrees in having in locking the door leading from the third floor. Many other instances of alleged negligence are also cited. Two jurors were selected before recess to try Barkin. the prosecution.
