‘6 NO PERSONAL GOD IS GROWING BELIEF AMONG SCIENTISTS — Less than Half the Leading Thinkers of the Country Approve the Dogma. PHILADELPHIA, Dec, 2—Less than half the leading scientists In this country believe in a personal God and about the same percentage believes in the immortality of the soul, ac- cording to figures procured by Dr. James H. Leuba, professor of psy- chology in Bryn Mawr College Ds. Leuba also finds that a college edueation weakens the religious be- llefs still accepted in the average home of the land and that as stu- dents’ mental powers mature and thelr horizon broadens a large per, contage of them abandon the cardinal Ohristian beliefs. According to Dr. Leuba's figures, based on @ careful, scientific canvass of college students, from 40 to 50 per cent. of college graduates go out into the world doubting or denying the fundamental dogmas of the Christian religion. Dr. Leuba canvassed by mall a carefully selected number taken from “gmerican Men of Science,” a volume containing about 5,000 names and from the membership liste of tho American Association, the American Sociological Society and the Ameri- can Psychological Association, In- cluded in his canvasa were historians, rhysical scientists, biological scient- ists, sociologists and paydhologia' ‘The result of his research is to a) pear in a book entitled “The Belief in God and Immortality.” Dr. Leuba divided the men to whom he sent his questionaire into two classes—the acknowledged leaders in scientific thought and what he terms | ng & deposition In the hope of exc the “lesser men", or those whose| learning is not so profound as to earn them the honor of being “starred” in “American Men of Science.” He finds that of the leaders only 31.6 per cent. are believers in God while among the lesser lights the percent- ag of belief in God is 48.2. The total percentage of unbelief is 53.2 per cent, and of belief 41.8. Coliege and university professo: Save the Babies. But when Prof. mpares the lesser with the joyed by the the per cent. of vers among greater men The historians and physical scien tists provide the greater number believers and the paychologiats, ciologista and biologists the sma number of believers.
