ee THE EVENING WORLD, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1916." “78 Claudia Muzio, Singing Tosca, Gets an Ovation By Sylvester Rawling. LAUDIA MUZIO, an American to all intents and purposes, who has sung tn Italy and at Covent Garden, mado her American debuf at the Me itan Opera House last aight as Tosca in the first presenta- tion this season ef Puccini's opera of that name based upon Sardou's play. ‘The house was crowded to the Mmit. More than a thousand people seeking eeats and standing room were turned @way. Not even on the opening night was there such a crush or such ex- ‘eftement. Mise Muzio fs welcome to the com- pany. Her volce and her art will add to the etrength of the organization, Not that last night ehe eolipsed mem- orfes of former impersonators of Tosca—sometimes, indeed, she made ua sigh for one, or more, of her predo- eessors; but she brought to our notice & fresh voice, a gracious presence, an expressive face, a lithe and graceful gure, and gifts of acting far beyond the ordinary. In tho first act, mak- ing allowances for nervousness, there ‘Was little with which to find fault, Dut ft is the second act that tries and tests a Tosca—for there the imper- eonator of the diva must sing as well as act, otherwise why the music?— and it was there that Miss Muzio fell short. Her realistic acting drove her to screaming, and, after all, the “Vissi @Art"” must be sung, and will any real music lover say that it was sung last night? In the third act she was at her it, and, on the whole, Mise Muzio may well be pleased with her debut. Her voice, essentially lyric, is gure to be heard to better advantage fm other parts, and she js young enough to wait for the portrayal of a Tosca that may carry us off our feet. Of Carueo's singing of Mario, what fe there new to say? Scotti’s ja, too, is unlikely to find an equal. It is an impersonation never to be forgotten, For the rest, there were Sophie Brasiau's Shepherd, Rossi's Angelotti, Malatesta’s Sacris- tan, Bada's Spoletta, Begue’s Solar- rone and Reschtgiian’s Jailer, all ef- fective and all familiar, and directing all effectively was Mr. Polacco.
