Patrick Harmon of Seattle paraded up the steps of City Hall to-day walking backward, guiding himself ) by means of a reflector. While waiting to pay his respects to Mayor Mitchel, Harmon explained that he travelled 3,900 miles, which he says he covered in 239 days, and jthat the freak walk was the result , of a wager made in a club in Seattle that he could not walk the distance in 260 days. The clubman who took Harmon's end of the bet promised him $5,000 if he won. W. H. Baltazor, also of Seattle, was engaged by the other to follow Harmon and see that he never kept his eyes from the getting sun while moving eastward. “Harmon walked backwards every inch of the distance,” declared the transcontinental watchman. Harmon is fifty years old. He was penniless when he left San Francisco and, in keeping with: part of the agreement that went with the wager, made his own living expenses.
