The advertising manager of a national magazine was talking about thrift the other day, and called attention to the extreme diMculty of carrying “I find it impossible,” he sald, “in playing golf, to keep my score accurately without taking a score As for keeping track of my household expenses, I , Would not have even a vague fdea of where I stand If we did not run things in the mind any set of figures for a given time card along with me jon the budget plan, I tried the haphazard way for several years, but now 1 KNOW OS SHOWS THE SUCCESS OF THE, an ENVELOPE SYSTEM. wht the envelope system ts used The ‘Pheift editor has personal With good results, Here 4s an iilus-| knowled, @ number of homes in tration Makes Home Baking Easy ROYAL BAKINGPOWDER ABSOLUTELY PURE No Atum—WNo PHOSPHATE Paterson, N. A budget was carefully plan- ned. The total for a month was di- vided into four parts, Then a series! of small envelopes were marked with | jthetr respective items—rent, bank, &«., and each week the money for same; pod therein. The bank envelope Ja the same importance as the! others and must be as regularly filled, THE BUDGET: Bank, $10; table, 60; lodge, .80; clothes, $1; n Every pay rance, .: cldentals, $1 | HOW poo I By paying cash, by dealing at chain stores and | by personally doing the marketing. Furthermore, a house- wito who figures closely enough to make one gas burner do the work of two or three will see that the budget never interferes with the savings account. LEARNING TO SAVE MATRIMONY NEAR. Approaching matrimony ts the in- centive for thrift on the part of a | Brooklyn young woman, who is skil- | ful’ managing her pennies and dimes. | To the Thrift Hditor of The Brening World never occurred to me to write SAVE? WITH It ur about thrift until an old lady friend suggested that I was just the sort of @ person you wanted to hear from. I do not go to business, but my dad ives me an allowance of $8 a weeks nis covers all my expenditures easily, ery week I deduct a dollar of books I have sub- for a set scribed for. | 1 keep all my pennies in a box for that purpose. At the end of the month 1 change the pennies into dimes for my bank, which opens when {t regis- ters $20, I add to this bank fund every time I get adime. Of course I take my Httle horde to the bank as goon as It appears. This method has done a great deal toward bringing my bank account up to $500 within the past four or five years, hot afraid to dye anything sults have always been good. 1 am engaged, so I put something away in my hope chest every week. My Christmas list numbers thirty, so I start in July to make presents. : With a wife thus Inclined it Is certain that a policy of thrift will prevail in her household. The bank account Is being built up as & «matter of course, and on an allowance of $& weekly a balance of $500 is commendable, The writer gives plenty of evidences of thrift, so that the hope chest doubtiess will be well filled by the time {it is needed. Whatever her husband's Income may be, it will receive careful handling. THE THRIFT RECORD OF THE CAREFUL HOUSEKEEPER, A thorough trutning along lines of thrift and economy, practised by this writer before her marriage stands her in good stead now that she has @ bud- et to manage To the Thrift Editor of The Evening World: Dear Sir: Have been reading with great interest your letters in The vening World, and as 1 too practice thrift and economy in my home I hope my letter will prove both interesting and beneficial to other readers. Before 1 was married 1 worked tn! the office of a large manufacturing concern, where only hustlers ever were advanced in work and salary That is Where I learned to become systematic and methodical, I earned a fairly good salary, all of which 1 gave to my parents, except $2, which I was allowed to keep for my own personal use, My parents furnished mne only with the clothing I absolute- ly had to have, so, of course, I had good use for the $2. An occasional party dress, dance slippers, good gloves, extra hat, fancy waists, pres- ents for my friends, books and maga- zines, besides various other little things, had to be paid out of my small allowance. and that is what started me on the road of economy, which I am atill practising, though Lam married to 4 man earning $25 per week. We have been married four and & half years and have two baby girls. My husband works right in town, so has no lunch or carfare expense. Holidays, of course, he gets deducted, so that week a holiday comes in his salary is always $4.18 short, which he makes up by working overtime certain evenings In the month. That un} My re- overtime money {s put aside holiday week arrives, and in that way the shortage ts made up. have a five-room and bath ment in a two-family house in ning, L, I. Our rent ts $21 per month, Our heat, of course, is our own expense, but as it is a hot water system {t only requires four or five tons of coal, amounting to about $30 per year, We have what we call the envelope tem, with a cash box containing twelve envelopes for our weekly items, as follows: Bank, $8; clothing, $2 personal allowances (for both), $2 household, insurance, $1.50; Inct- dentals, $1; light and fuel, $1; rent 35.25; telephone (expense shared with another tenant), 23 cents; washing, $1; total, $25, HW. This’ is an exceptionally well balanced budget, with the allow- ance for the bank deposit prom!- nently displayed. The envelope system again appears as @ means ‘That meant close figuring, | for insuring the proper distribution of income. ‘The writer's letter in- T make my own clothes and T am CANDY CATHARTI dicates that her early expertence FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN in managing the Items classed as | luxurids will enable her to enjoy them at the present time on tho allowance she receives. BUDGET SHOWED WHERE HE WASTED MONEY. This young man diagnosed his own case and prescribed a treatment which effected a cure for his finan- cial aliments. Bronx. To the Theitt Baitor A desire to know how much “profit” L waa making prompted me repare @ sheet with the headings ecessities” and “Luxuries,” with appropriate sub-headings, Day by day the expenditures were entered. At the end of the month the sheet was totalled. The totals showed me that 1 was wasting money. Though this was not the information sought it was w I realized that I had a “budge QJanuary'’s diary is February's budget) that was in harmony with me, not an abitrary budget, the thought of which was irksome, He- sides, the diary showed where sav- ings ‘could be effected. I was spending too much on cheap amusements. The amusements that give the most fun per dollar do not require as frequent indulgence. Therefore, I saved time. I invested my new found time tn study, Infor- mation under “Necessities” I found valuable, na a guide to the prices of | commodities and the sho a the most value, Seas Last year out of a salary of $12.50 & week I deposited $100 in the hank. My ‘ation cost me $15 a week. Dentat progress) cost me $10. I beiong to a pension fund with insurance provisions (1 per cent of | salary). I invested over $60 in educa~ tion. (I expect “dividends” to nearly double my did salary as a result of this investment.) This year, with a substantial in~ crease in salary, I shall live just the same and invest the additional man in building loan associations. The growing demand for money promises good returns for money saved and invested now. Thrift ts care and wis. dom in managing one's natural ad- vantages. ———<+—_——. TO CREMATE BODY OF JAMES.
