About Plays and Players PRESS AGENT has just brought to our desk a state- ment to the effect that « new comedy, “although risque, is go- ing to be a bie success.” We'll bet tt ‘won't be a big success tf tt te brazen, in ie troatment of the #ex question, and we're no atickler for reform in the drama, either. It is our opinion that the suggestive element on the) stage is unnecesary and almost ol variably unprofitable. Especially ts| it @ detriment, in the long run, to a comedy. A drama may oall a apade &@ epode, and m.ke mo. y at it, but it won't win unless the sex feature te wubordinated by a big heart in- torest. And now let's see why. An openly riaque play will fail to attract at least bait @ million people right here tm New York. While many girls will wip away to the theatre to see a play of this sort, there are thousands of girls who won't, not to mention the young men and older people who will avoid it. To prove our conten- tien, we point to “Sadie Love.” It was funny, but a woman in ft went DB @ honeymoon with four or five men. It all worked out immocently enough, but despite the efforts vf Marjorie Rambeau, one of the most able young actresses in Amerioa, the play did not bring big financial re- turos in New York. Shortly after this play closed, ite management opened “The Cinderella Man” at the Hudson Theatre. It Proved to be clean, sweet and other- wise wholesome, and the theatre isn't big enough to hold the crowds that want to see it. “Common Clay” is an example of the sex drama with the eart eppeai. in this play the latter ale- ment reiegates the risque to the rear im @uch @ pronounced manner as to make it incidental, You may argue at “Twin Beds,” which ts till mak- img money, is risque ik isn’t There's nothing rieque about it but its name. If you don’t believe the Play without the brazen sex element i@ the one that makes the big money, ask somebody who knows to tell you what “Peg o' My Heart” and “Within the Law” cleared. HATTONS PLACE A PLAY. Prederic and Fannie Hatton, the Chicago dramatists with the New York jeanings, came to town the other day and brought « Mas yg od their wares along. Almost the it crack out of the box they placed a yp deals with the sex question to a certain ex- tent, and this means the Hattons have rearra: their ideas about play writing somewhat. They ueed to say they would never touch on that subject, but they've gone and done it. “Years of Disoretion” and “The Great Lover,” tho latter being the product of their collaboration with ne aoe ae ite star, are examples their art—examples any family addicted to the play-writing habit might well be proud of too. NEW PLAY FOR MI88 ADAMS. Maude Adams will appear in a new gomedy by J. M, Barrie next season. The dramatist has notified Alf Hay- nan, General Manager of the Froh- an Company, that the play will be ready in plenty of time, Miss Adams will remain at the Empire untt) March 18 and then spend the re- mainder of the season touring the! pert, but he drot the “bert” when| Local No. 1, will hold its annual bali| cluded the beauty, “I had to tell that principal eities in “The Little Min-|@ boy in order gon people think|at the New Austerdam Opera House] guy I wantad some good liver. 8 Home and Comic Page “S*’MATTER, POP?” > a MUSEUM FREAK, ARLING, 15 SOMETHING) Wit AN EXTRA — 4 PART, USUALLY P ALURIGUY’ FRANK AY BANE.
