’ r (i + JAMES MM. HOPPER FACING ARMY DUTY AS FRENCH ITZ Author Sends Plea to Father- in-Law in Frisco to Prove He’s American. IN PARIS FO _ Writer Son of Englishman and Frenchwoman, Never Nat- uralized in U, S. (Speotal to The Evening World.) BAN’ FRANCISCO, Jan, 11.—James M. Hopper, the novelist and short @tory writer, bas cabled a frantic ap- Peal to his father-in-law, Joseph A. “Leonard, of this city, from the ranks of the French army, Hopper, who is now in Paris, has been fm France for nearly a year, serving a8 @ war correspondent for Collier's and other American publications, According to his cablegram, the French authorities recently learned that Hopper was born in Paris and that his father was an Englishman and his mother a Frenchwoman. His mother moved to California after his father’s death and never was natural- ined. A peculiar feature of the situation fs that Hopper wrote home three months ago telling of his eagerness to fight in the French army and bis regret that a disability of the knee, fmcurred when he was a member of the University of California football team, caused his rejection by the recruiting officers. Hopper, known to the literary world as “Jimmy,” was aware as far back as 1909 of the possibility that he would be held liable for military duty im France. Just as he was starting for Paris on a literary trip he made burried inquiries regarding the taking eat of naturalization papers, and was much worried when he found it was & process of years. He took the chance, but as France Was then at peace, her right to make Hopper take part in tho three weeks’ Manouevres required of Frenchmen of his age was not enforced. Mrs. Hopper and their five-year-old @on are with the author in Paris. The message to Mr, Leonard asks for @ copy of the marriage certificate, in which it was set forth that Hopper was an American. Tho certificate went the way of nearly all San Fran- cisco records in the tlre which fol- lowed the earthquake of 1906. Mr, Leonard will prepare affidavits which he hopes will convince the French @uthorities that the fluffy haired young author is not liable for service. YEAR. No question has ever been made of|* Hmmy Hopper’s physical or moral bravery. The recklessness of his toot- ball playing was a by-word at Berk- eley. He spent a year in the Philip- pines in outiying districts as a school teacher when the insurrectos were on the rampage. Other correspondents have reported him as taking desperate chances in efforts to get material for describing trench warfare at first hand. Hopper’s tales have covered themes of comedy and grim tragedy. His book in collaboration with F, R. Bechtold, "9009," gave a decided tm- petus to prison reforms now gener- ally advocated. A series of basebali stories gtew out of his observations of the Giants on their spring train-| ing trip. Ono of his most notable | stories recently is “Goosie,” the tale of a man who grew wings of fancy and met with strange adventures, The French law is peculiarly drastic regarding citizenship. It holds a claim on the citizenship of every child born on French soil or of French parents anywhere in the world. ne . DINNER TO JOHN N. WILLYS.
