en a nenecmnege Reducing 210-Pound Woman’s Weight | By Proper Diet and Scientific Exercise Pirst Few Days of Four Weeks’ Treatment Being Devoted to Limbering Muscles of Mrs. St. James and Reducing Lower | ; { Part of Her Body, Miss Furlong Outlines Methods Em- |! ployed in Starting to Improve Her Subject’s Figure. By Pauline Furlong. ‘Aa it 1s my Intention to devote the first ten days to limbering up the ib As furniture. being noticed. T almost forgot to tell my readers What we are practising the neck and @hin exercises each day, ns it is very Mecessary to build up the soft, flabby Smuscles in this region, so that they @an support the loose flesh after tho ‘tat has disappeared. It is my deter- @ination to not only reduce many pounds of unnecessary flesh from! Mrs. St. James, but to also show al ‘marked improvement in her general Realth and appearance. “ THE NECK AND THROAT EXER- CISES, Each of the neck and throat move- monte is practised fifty times every day. Forward, backward and from @ée to side, as has been illustrated in the pag} series. After these the cold @ium solution is applied and allowed * dry on, thereby hardening the soft @esh and making {t firm, smooth and mold. At night my pupll wears the gabber chin band. Diet alone will not reduce ons and permit one to regain a youthful ap- pearance, because when the rolls of fat disappear the skin, which hos been stretched over the fat, naturally fangs wrinkled and flabby, and only ercise, together fan one hope to obtain a reduction in claes, for the reduction of the hips and thighs. told my readers that my pupil would try a few of the) {) trunk raising exercises to help reduce the large mall domen, but these were not practised at this carly stage of her course, as they were impossible for her to per- form even with her feet braced under a heavy piece of Owing to the fact that her heart has been pro- nounced strong by the doctor, Mra. St. James took the stationary running exercise with me about fifty steps, as she informed me she had started to practise this y exercise in her own home, without any undue strain weight and an improvement in the appearance and health, Mrs, St. James's complexion Is of a beautiful texture, emooth and unusu- ally white, and I firmly expect to keep it so, and at the end of her treatment to have her look at least ten years younger in figure and still retain her wonderful, youthful skin. I have no wish to disguise the fact that obese patients who wish to re- gain a normal size must exercise will- power and self-denial, but after the first three days the severity of it In a thing of the past. The relief from the great burden of flesh is felt within twenty-four hours and I have never known a case where the patient has held out for three days that she did not continue to do so, and succeeded tn the andertaking. THE DIET FOR REDUCTION. ‘The diet for an all-round reduction of superfluous fat must consist of foods which will sustain muscular power, nourish the body and at the same time not create fat. There jn no daoger of starving to death, as ts the general opinion, and a person bur- dened with nearly a hundred pounds more fat than intended by nature, like Mrs, St. James, could really live many weeks without taking anything else but water and perhaps some fruit juices, She could really live on her fat for weeks and weeks without any serious complications arising. All alcoholic stimulants are forbid- den those who would reduce MASA - ee we ta also soft drinks, ice cream sodas, corona, chocolate and rich milk. Light skim milk may be t on gluten breakfast foods, sweetened — with #weetona, and some buttermilk or un- Sweetened lemon water may be taken between meals occasionally. Drinking with meals is, of course, forbidden in the obesity diet. WHAT MRS. ST. JAMES EATS. My pupil took half a grapefruit! without sugar yesterday, and to-day | for breakfast a cup of weak tea and graham toast. At noon Thursday she | had a vegetable salad, lettuce, toma- | toes and onions, dressed with a sma: amount of vinegar, salt and pepper, and a gluten muffin. To-day she had} two poached eggs on gluten toast and a baked apple for lunch. Thursday she had a broiled lamb chop, Brussels sprouts, stewed tomatoes, gluten bread and fruit salad for dinner, and to-day Mrs. St. James will have boiled ‘mutton, mashed turnips, cold slaw, stewed peaches, sweetened with sweetena, and gluten bread, My pupil continues to alternate with the vichy and Kissengen waters a half hour after every meal each day, Mra. 8St. ames to-day walked the entire ce for her lesson, which is a mile or more, and her cheeks were pink and all aglow from the fresh-alr exercise. After each lesson my pupil is given every other day with a’ fifteen-min- an electric sweat bath, alternating ute one and a three-minute nia. | She follows these with a hot water | and soap bath in the tub, a rub- BONWIT TELLER &CO, | De Spel Slopof Orpinaon fr FIFTH AVENUE_AT 38™ STREET Special for Saturday Misses’ Fur Trimmed Tailleur Suits Formerly to 49.60 25.00 Covert, broadcloth and wool velour models, in flare path Godet bs penal Megeyre collared and cuffed raccoon, seal or colors and black.
