Many were women and children bound for the United States, where they intended making their homes. It is believed that several Americans were on the Ancona, Nothing definite has been received regarding theit fate. ‘ ee ee 2 The figures as to the loss of life are conflicting. One report has it that 271 perished. This was based on reports that 130 survivors had been landed at Bizerta, 54 at Bona, 45 at the Island of Malta and 142 at Ferryville, This would make a total of 371 saved. On board the Ancona were 642 persons, consisting of 482 passer gers and a crew of 160. With 371 savea, the number missing would be }274, provided 142 survivors reached Ferryville. Despatches say scores of survivors were severely injured. It was jreported that 100 shells were fired at the Ancona before she was tor- | pedoed, and the injurieS of the survivors were due to bursting shells. There is hardly a doubt that a submarine of the largest type actacked the Ancona while she was passing between Tunis and Sicily. Although the attacking boat flew the Austrian flag, one of the reports here was that she was a German U-boat and was bound toward the Dardanelles when the Ancona was sighted.
