She witt give a course of lessons to the women readers of The Bve- ning World thie summer on “How to Make Yourself Well and Btrong and Preserve Your Figure.” LESSON XxXil. By Pauline Furlong. The problem of the thin woman's diet ts the problem of adjusting her need of rich food, in which the sweets, starches and fats, the tissue builders, predominate, to her probably not over strong digestive apparatus. Of the foods usually recommended to the thin woman eggs are rather easy to digest. Milk is not readily di- gestible by many persons. Meats di- gest more easily than vegetables, yot the starchy grains and vegetables should ‘hold an important place in menus designed to increase weight. For that matter, the meat which is richest in fat—pork—is the most diMoult of all for the human stom- ach to handle, The thin woman needs eweets, yet, as every child knows, too many sweets will make the healthiest of us ill, Actually, each thin woman must work out her own dietetic salvation. She must find out for aceimilate, and eeeimiletion te: end atawhioh she aim 1916, I have tried to aubstitute what may be called “simple richness,” euch under ‘which term I include dark fruit-cake pastries and elaborately sauced made dishes. The drink called “eumik” is simply beaten eour milk. I urge thin women to consider these simple menus as suggestions rather than as cast-iron laws, Fat women had better turn away their envious eyes, Next wook I sball print some menus especially for them, SOME GOOD EXERCISES WHICH BENEFIT THIN WOMEN, Coming to the question of exer- cise, the thin woman will de well to remember the old Greek warn- ing, “Nething too much.” She as- euredly needs a certain amount of gentle exercise every day, but she does not need and ought not to take up the violent sports which will do the fat woman all the good in the world. There are two out- door practices, however, which will be of great benefit to the thin woman. One of these ie walking, the other is ewimming. When the thin woman walks she should not try to see how much ground she can cover in certain period of time. Let her walk quietly and at & moderate pace paying par- tioular attention to her breathing, ‘Walking in the fresh air will help you to breathe correcity, and it will also give youa yy oa enetite for those three meal od, wholesome food of which Mee tact to dispose daily, Swimming also will aid your appetite, and Lt i positively the best jand quickest wa: “ develop the bust 8 te the swimm! to gain weight tod a he metrical bos If, however, you are not near thi shore, or for some other reason it | Impossible for you to go Into the wa ter, there are in ‘your roon | shoulder de reproduced to-day.
