NEW “CURE” IS FOUND. Cent. of Recoveries by Use of Serum. Dr. Robert Abbe, senior surgeon at St. Luke's Hospital, says, in this week's New York Medical Journal, that he is convinced, from his ex- perience with 100 cases of mouth can- cer, that inveterate or excessive uso of tobacco will lead to that disease. Of the 100 patients, he states, ten were women. “Of the ninety men,” ho says, “all were heavy smokers except one, who had a cancer of the lip in a ecar from an old baseball injury. Almost every man had been an inveterate smoker of from three to twenty cigara daily. One denied cigars, but acknowledged one or two packages of cigarettes daily. “Many used a pipe, which often caused cancer to begin where the pipe end allowed the hot emoke to come upon the tongue. “1 find six among thirty-six tongue cancers were in smokers of cigarettes only. One was a woman who smoked a package ddlly; one was a man who smoked what were called ‘all tobacco’ cigarettes, fifty in a pack. He smoked a pack a day.” One of the worst cases in Dr, Abbe's experience was a woman who was in the habit of dipping a tooth- brush in enuff and ap ubbing it on her tongue. She liked the “stinging feel- ing,” she said. Another woman said she often burned her tongue with hot coffee. “About one case in ten,” says Dr, Abbe, “came from a rough tooth, Ker glue hot burning drinks, The other nine-tenths are chargeable to tobacco.” . Thirteen of the 100 patients had cancer inside the cheek, and all had chewed tobacco as well as spoked. In each case the cancer started where the tobacco quid was held, or on the edge of the palate or tongue nearby, Dr, Abbe had a case of cancer of the mouth that began opposite two teeth, one filled with amalgam, the other with gold. It is possible, he says, that continued electric irrita- tion from a mild voltaic pile caused by two different metals bathed in an acid fluid, might cause the cancer. Discovery of an anti-serum for cancer is announced by Dr. W. N. Berkeley of the Good Samaritan Dis- pensary. i His anti-serum is got, he says, by extracting a cancer tumor with water and precipitating the neucleoproteids and globulins. The resulting extract he injects, Regarding its use thus far, Dr. Berkeley says: “Of about fifty cases injected after a primary operation between two and four years ago about 80 per cent. re- main entirely well to-day. Under or- dinary circumstances this would have| 4 been the percentage of recurrences. “It seems fair to sa too that, with Increasing skill and experience in making the serum, and larger knowl. | } edge of what constitutes an effective done, the next fifty cases will show a still’ more encouraging per cent. of apparently Jasting cures. Of the above ‘cured’ cases, a number have followed a demonstrably incomplete extirpation—tinaccessible portions of the tumor being undoubtedly left be- hind at the time of operation,” peti shi Nas ITEMS FOR INVESTORS.
