WARDEN TO RESIGN AFTER MURDER OF JOLIET, Tl, June 22.—sStunned by the murder of his beautiful wife, who + Was attacked in her room and then burnedeto death, Warden Edmund M. Allen ts planning to quit his position in the Joliet Penitentiary, it was said here to-day. He is known as the “Golden Rule Ward7n," because of the leniency shown prisoners. “I could not bear to remain here,” Allen said to a friend, who tHed to \ Console him. “Everything would re- mind me of this horrible tragedy. No blame is in any way to be attached to the prisoners, who loved Mrs. Allen and myself and have been terribly shocked by the attack on her.” The murder of Mrs. Allen will not affect the “honor system” which has Prevaiied in the penitentiary, Allen said so himself to-day, in a letter which he sent to “his boys,” as he calls the convicts. The message came at a time when the prisoners, keyed to a high tension by the news of the murder as it trav- elled over the “grapevine,” were in a state of revolt and had risen from the «Prison dining table to lynch “Chicxen Joe" Campbell, the negro trusty, ac- cused of murdering the Warden's wife, Mere is the letter which was read to the convicts by Jim Allen, the Warden's brother: “In this, the greatest trial of my life, I want at least the knowledge that the boys for whom I and mine have tried to do are doing the right thing. I will do nothing until I have talked with you in chapel. If you want to help lighten my grief, be 100 per cent, men,” A hush fell over the 1,000 as wel ‘Who stood with bared heads as + letter was read by the Warden's brother, James Allen, and the lynch- ' HIS WIFE IN PRISON tng party Prison officials to-day decided that oa — big My ) ee ry sibility. . jen, “an had attacked her Beto bod burned about Le aatee se and ‘? ard fore convict and guards "xy" the fire. and poe pp choking, into the emoke- ALL CARS TRANSFER TO “THE HOME OF TRUTH’ 59th to 60th Street Lex.to 3d AV.
