@ THES SWEWING WORLD, MONDAY, APRIL 8, 10918.* AN APPEAL TO THE AMERICAN “Let us alleviate human suffering and preserve EOPLE life---not help to destroy it.” AS a result of receiving hundreds of thousands of letters, cables and messages through various sources — heart-broken appeals, prayers and pleas from the people of our mother countries, we, the undersigned fs ed and publishers, have concluded to place this appeal before the great ican people on behalf of our readers. The readers of our newspapers are vitally affected, almost without exception, by this disastrous conflict of the European nations. Their brothers, their sisters, parents, children or relatives live in the warring countries. This does not mean that the Ameri- can people as a whole is not vitally affected, but our readers are aor closely linked through the bonds of blood relationship with the peoples of countries now plunged in the di 3 of barbaric warfare. Each day's mail with its news of the pitiful progress of the war, brings some new and bitter anguish to "he hearts of our people. The pleas of the millions of widowed mothers, the appeals of the fatherless children and orphans and the prayers of the starv- ing thousands of Europe directed to us, justifies us, we believe, in making this appeal in the name of humanity and justice. WE appeal to the American people, to the high minded and courageous American press, and to the American manufacturer of powder, shrap- nel and cartridges, and we appeal to the workmen o engaged in the plants devoted to the manufacture of ——e for = wid the nations at war, to immed aking powder, shrapnel and cartridges destin ine ostines ined to destroy our brothers, widow our sisters and mothers and orphan their children as well as destroy forever the priceless possessions handed down by our ancestors. We appeal particularly to the American manufacturers and their workmen engaged in ae tats food | any of these articles, to suspend at once the manufacture of powder and bullets which are being made for the cruel and inhuman purpose of mutilating and destroying humanity. We appeal individually to the workmen of such factories, even at the sacrifice of their positions, Bnd go on record as being unalterably opposed to being employed for the purpode of manu- facturing ammunition to shatter the bodies and blot out the lives of their own blood relatives. e THE honor of the iain people, the integrity of the Nation, the standing of our manufac- turers and the patriotism a manhood of the workmen, demand that the entire world be shown, cage, ane forever, that money soaked with the of humanity cannot i: these qualities. We ask the American people, therefore, in the name ef humanity and a true spirit of neutrality to do everything in thelr power as individuals and collectively as a Nation to influence the manufacturers and workmen in the United States, engaged in the manufacture of powder and bullets for use by any of the w countries of the world, to end this manufacture, the selling the shipping of such materials. appeal to you, and every reader, to help us save our broad from further destruction. t us vise with courage and decision to our responsibility. FIRST, we must stop the wholesale manufac- ture of ammunition for profit, and thus end our own PaEN eaten in the war. 'N, we can insist that Europe heed our de- mand for peace. Stop your work on powder, shrapnel and cannon. Make your will felt through resolutions of your societies, 4 apes! to to your local press, by action in your churches, by letters to your repre- sentatives in public office. Our participation must stop now and then our influence for justice and righteousness can help end the war. The cost of this advertisement has been voluntarily given in the shape of small contributions by our people, who are actuated by a sense of humanity and justice and a patriotic desire not to have this peace-loving Nation directly or indirectly the cause of further loss of life or destruction of property. armel sic OME!
