Undervaluations. Acowstomed to living in Paris at the rate of $1,000 a week, Mra. Geo wite of Col, Edward Harrison Powers, who made millions in, Wyoming land, must managed to get along in New York on $30 a week alimony. Supreme Court Justice Leh- man awarded her that amount to-day after reading in affidavits filed in her separation suit the charge that Col. Powers had taken $200,000 worth of diamon@s and emeralds from her apartment in the Motel Majestic, Paris. The Colonel was recently arrested by ‘deputy sheriffs on a body attach- lenent insued at the request of Miss Maude Mittern, an actress, who brought sult against him for breach of promise and settled for $1,500. Mrs. Powers says her husband paid off the breach of promise sult settlement at the rate of $250 a month, while she was almost penniless in the French Hospital. After thelr marriage in 1897, Mrs. Powers alleges, she and the Colonel went to Paris and were happy until Dec. 12, 1911, when he suddenly left the Majestic, taking the jewels and other property belonging to her. For months, she says, she lived on gifts of money made to her by friends. Mrs. Powers came to New York Nov. 30 last, upon leafhing of her husband's arrest and his trouble with the actress. She met him at the Hotel McAlpin, and, she says, he promised to support her, but after waiting another month, she alleges, he failed to live up to his promise and the suit for maintenance ~vas brought. She says she learned most the $200, 000 jewels had been pawned. She also charges the Colonel disposed of $50,000 worth of land she owned in Natchez, Miss., and pocketed the proceeds. In defense, Col. Powers says he stopped sending hjs wife funds after he learned that she had been living in clandestine relations with “divers persons in Paris and London.’ . smalioe charge Mrs. Powers brands as fous and untrue. The Colonel al Goorge Silva, managing director Gad socretary of Sclama & Compaay, @ ' New York corporation engaged im ‘ the importation of cogtumenand.@s- ‘¢ trich feathers, was arraigned before 4 Judge Pope in the Federal Distetet Court to-day on two indictments, one for undervaluing importations the other for conspiring with Henry Blumfeld—Sciama, Sciama & Co. and Bocieto Anongme Sciama to defraud the United States Government of customs duties.
