A strange opposition has devel- oped to this new legisiation, which flies in the face of all arguments previously used by hotel owners and the managers of several of the taxicab concerns. We have always heard from the hotel own- ers and larger taxicab companies that their drivers were the only honest men with whom the guests of the hotels could be intruated. We are now met by a strange rightabout argument. I have re- ceived a letter from one of the largest taxicab companies in the city, signed by its president, in which he says: “It would be Imponsible to get the public to ride In a cab where the driver regulated the charge (which he must do in all cases where dilatory distances are made without taximetrea in some way being aMxed), Both the public and. the company would without question be subject to great fraud on the part of any dishonest | chauffeur, and for this reasonwe should not be denied the right to use any device that might pre- | vent such @ possibility.’ * * * NDICATES WISH TO DEFEAT ANY REFORM. In contrasting these two lines of argument one is led to believe that the opposition to the original taxicab ordinance and thie amendment is not sincere, but | that the real gist of the matter ie that the taxicab ordinances are cutting In on special privileges and rebates wrongfully charged the travelling public, and that ev- ery step taken by the city au- thorities in this direction will be met by one argument or anether, In the hope that all reforms may be defeated. ‘The inveatigations conducted by the Commissioner of Accounts’ office, when this taxicab matter wun first taken up, showed that the hotels in this city were re- ceiving very large rebates on the fare charged each guest leaving the hotel. One house tn particu- lar received an income of over $30,000 per annum from this taxi cab rebate, and another received over $20,000 per annum, There is a persistent effort be- ing made und ery subterfuge known by jounsel to con- tinue this rebate practice. At the public hearing that t held on this amendment the at- | torney of the Hotel Association frankly stated: “It is @ fact that we are re. | ceiving @ commission, and that in | one of the principal reasons why | 1 am here.” | The man who made this state- ment before me further said: “L represent all the big hotels in | the city of New York in tis anso- | ciation.” | # attorney also said "t know any reason after hotel man has devoted his life and money to the hotel business should not make a profit he taxicab wervice part of Licenses, the taxicab bum- y ine ensed vehicles under i by your Honorable | licensed be enn, Aue. 31, 1014, This is an increas nearly 800 over the » 1913, FOUN PUIROY MErCHier Mayor monthe in your silent Piano with the skill of a master musician, '250 ond imstel'stion mehes i a» fey one excelling any Je” have ever of High-Class Fur Garments, Muffs and Neckpieces, i in addi- tion to the remaining stock, are offered at price concessions ranging from 33 1/3% to 50% less than the prevailing prices of Furs of similar quality.
