It gives us a sort of shock every time, but it is only the penalty of a wonderful thirty- five years’ record. Only a few days age one much-valued customer of ours who does know us pretty well confessed that she had never realized that we had a depart- ment of women’s footwear. That was not so strange to us, however, for it is almost a new department; incidentally, it is active with all sorts of proof that ‘“‘you never pay more at Best’s.”’ Fifth Avenue, West Bide, Corner of 86th Btreet air eA RR Ra apa ARRIBA. Coogan and Attorney Ernest B, Elisworth, went out to try to secure bail, Upto noon they had been no more success- ful than was Morgan's wife, formerly Miss Lucille Snow Couch of Provi- idence, who ‘yesterday hurried from her home in New lochelle and spent the day in a vain quest for a bonda- fate to-day through a bonding com. | pany. Morgan, who comes of an old and prominent Connecticut family, was) formerly cashier at the Aetna Na- tional, one of the biggest banks in jNew Englang. TWO WOMEN CHARGE THEFT OF STOCK. Morgan ts charged with embezzling proceeds of stock belonging to Miss Elizabeth F, Hubbard of West Hart- ford and her sister Helen, wife of J. W. O'Connor of New Rochelle. Of 400 shares of Actna Life Insur- ance Company stock, selling around 550, Morgan admitted he had never made an accounting of 104 shares, but had used the money to save from ruin his New York business, the fail- ure of which he blames on the Fed- eral Government. He was making money last spring selling a specially patented envelope and blank for complying with com- plex requirements of the Income Tax Law. After Morgan had everything running smoothly and profitably the Government revised its income tax restrictions and Morgan's concern be- gan to wobble. In a vain effort to “play the part” he purchased a big home, now heav- {ly mortgaged, in New Rochelle and |bought a big automobile, which last week he sold at a sacrifice when Mrs, O'Connor's attorneys pressed him for an immediate accounting. Morgan to-day nodded and smiled cheerfully to a number of po court-| acquaintances who entered the court- room. No evidence was introduced to-day. The chief office of the Morgan Bankers’ Service Corporation is in a handsome suite on the Thirty-ninth floor of the Woolworth Buitldir ;. When a reporter for The Evening World called there to-day Mr. Burtis, the manager, and the office staff seemed busy and undistirbed. “Do you know of any financial ems sement? was asked. “It ts ed that Mr, Morgan used Mies ards and Mea. O'Connor's money to help his business out of difficul- ties.” “There is no embarrasement at all, ao far as I know," Mr. Morgan replied “T have heard of nothing wrong. When Mr. Morgan left here last week he seemed in his usual spirits.” “Despatches from Hartfor! say he has suffered a nervous breakdown since his arrest and that he was sent to an asylum cight years ago.” “1 don’t believe ft,” ald Mr. Bur- tis, “He did tire himself out working day and night for the Aetna National Bank, of which he was cashier, and) oojjected for the firm and apectfically the directors gave him a long vaca-| acouses him of the larceny of $75 tion in which to regain his health. which he collected from the firm of That was in recognition of his valu-|Quong Tuck Wong in Mott Street, man.
