A spectacular fire to-day at the: West Farms terminus of the subway fed up most of the Bronx tratfic, de- stroyed the street clothes, small change and lunches of three hundred motormen and guards, burned some of the wooden cross ties of the ele- vated structure and very nearly de- stroyed two long rush-hour trains. The blaze started in the ofl room, of the terminus building and was | discovered by John Brown, a tower- man. He sent in an alarm imme- diately and the Bronx companies came on the run to fight an over- head conflagration. Two trains were | in the terminal and there were scores of passengers in the coaches. Two motormen jumped aboard and got them out before the fire reached them. The oll room was wiped out and the fire spread to the room where H | lockers for over three hundred men on duty were destroyed. For a while tt looked as if the whole terminal would be destroyed. ‘The firemen worked hard, however, and the damage to the structure was held down to about $1,000. While the fire was being fought the Van Courtlandt Avenue trolley line, the Bronx surface line and the One Hun- | | dred and Eightieth street crosstown line were blocked because of falling water and debris from the elevated structure of the subway. During the rush hour the thousands of Bronx people who take the trains at the end of the subway had to walk to the station at One Hundred and Seventy-seventh street. ——— Cash for Woman W' aby.
