NEW TARIFFS FILED @ BY RALROADS HOLD OVER TILL JULY 30 — he 5 Commerce Board Suspends Those Eliminating Allowances | | to Industrial Roads. roh 31, All new toby rs allowances to industrial railroads | Nieuw Were suspended to-day by the Inter-! state Commerce Commission until July 30, with tho exception of thote | affecting the United States Steel Cor- oration and other iron and ste eompanics, which were permitted “| Stand. Approximately four thousand tar- 1s were suspended, They would have become effec at midnight naa Were submitted in compliance with the commission's findings in the in durtrial railways case, in which it was held that allowances and divi- sions of rates made by trunk lines with certain industrial railways op- erated by iron and steel companies in Eastern territory were, in effect, rebates and should be discontinued. Nu tariffs affecting the industrial railways covered by the decision in the industrial railways case were suspended. Only those industrial railways that have not bad “their day if court” are granted a suspension of the tariffs affecting them. Elimination of allowances and di- visions with the industrial roads @erated by the United States Steel Corporation and other iron and steel companies in the East were per- mitted to stand. That will mean that, unless (he courts enjoin the trunk lines from discontinuing the allowances or the commission should give a rehearing of the industrial railways case, the turiffs will be effective against the Steel Corpora tion’s roads and against those of other tron and steel companies, It 1s esti- mated by experts of the commission that climination of such payments would mean an annual loss to the Steel Corporation alone of about $9,000,000, ’ The order provides for hearings. No date has been fixed, but it is scarcely likely they will be held be- fore next autumn, in which event it will be necessary before July 30, fur- ther to suspend the tariffs, To facilitate consideration of the advance rate case Chairman Harlan announced to-day that the Interstate Commerce Commission had decided to grant the request of the raliroads to hear their concluding testimony to-day and Thursday. The commission recently assigned yesterday and to-day to hearing re- presentatives of the carriers, and an- nounced at the time that if they were not able to complete thelr testimony at the close of March 41, the hearing would be continued for three days be- ginning April much as arg. uments on a al inquiry had been set for th vening days, On behalf of the carriers, George F.
