ROBBER SISPECTS RESISTING ARREST, a EET Officer Uses Gun on One Hos- pital Orderly, Whe, With Pal, . Faces Hold-Up Charge. Detectives MoManus and Walsh of the | Snyder avenue police station, Brooklyn, | were waiting in the room shared by | Wdward Howell and Patrick Powers, | when the men, ofderlies in the Kings| County Hospital in Clarkson street, Wiatbush, entered the hoapital dormitory jut 7 o'clock this morning. Last night two men had followed Morris Muse, a collector for the clear manu- factory of A. J. Locker, No. 2%7 Bush- wick avenue, from @ saloon opposite the hospital and robbed him of $22.60 he had @ollested there, as well as $1.50 of his own, beating him and leaving him un- conscious in the street. The detectives hed learned that Howell and Powers Were suspected of the robbery, * sald MoManus when the pair entered the room. Both men protested angrily that they had done nothing wrong except to re- main away from the hospital all night, and they refused to go with the dotec- tives until MoManus, who is a slight, ehort man, seized Howell, and Walsh, a big fellow, grabbed Powers, Until they neared the bottom of the stairs the men seemed resigned to going quietly. Sud- denly, thou Howell smashed Me- Manus in the face and fell with him to the bottom of the stairs, ‘There the pair rolled about the floor, kicking and striking at each other, with MoManus getting the worst of the en- counter, The uproar aroused every one in the east wing of the hospital whioh, fortunately, Is far removed from the quarters of the patients. V . nxeeing McManus getting a bad beating, Gropped Pow and went to his part- ner’s aid, Powers fled, ducking through an open door and making for the fence at the rear of the extensive hospital grounds. A couple of blows from Walsh's fists subdued Howell, and he held the man while McManus took up the pursuit of Powers, The orderly was many yards in the lead and Was nearing the tence when McManus drew his revolver, Stop there or UM shoot! shouted the detec aut ¥ and at just MoManus fired, |Edith Helena ers did not halt} NINE BATTLESHIPS, PICK OF THE NAVY, OFF | FOR MEDITERRANEAN As “‘Butterfly’’ Called by the Aborns to Take the Place of L Ewell, Indisposed, at the Century Opera House—Next Week’ Announcement it Them Toward Mexico in Case of Trouble. 1 By Sylvester Rawling UCCINI'S “Madam Butterft at the Centusy Opera House, had a neweoomer in the title part last The indisposition of Lots i HAMPTON ROADS, Oct. 2i.—Messen- night. which had forced Ivy Scott to im-/the United States, nine monster patties Opening—Eatreme dullness prevailed ae Gren, He tae Pereonate Cho Cho-Ban at four per-[ships, took their leave today of the 0), paula, Mol lultwal Mon we oS on ue formances in th-ce days, continued, #9] shores of America for the Mediterra- ihe active list, : i he the Messrs, Aborn called upon Edith} nean, While that was the destination | ‘There was an inclination te await out- iia : Holeny for her relief.
