ao EASY SAILING FOR THE GIANTS NEWS OF ALL BRANCHES OF SPORT GIANTS AND ATHLETICS. HAVE COMFORTABLE LEADS' With Soft Spots in Schedule During August, There Is Little Danger of Either Club Losing My in the Pennant Race—McLean, Carefully ; Handled, Will Strenghen Catching Depart- ment of the Giants. By John J. McGraw, Manager of the Giants. HERE {s now little danger of either the Giants or the Athletics losing in their respective lea, Both have comfortable leads for the middle of August with fairly spote ahead, and neither one of the second clubs has shown sufficient class to press either leader for the past month, I don’t see how any team can stop the Athletics, They are far and away the class of the American League, and the only flaw has been in the shortage of good, experienced pitchers, which Clarke Grifith said some time ago would beat them out of the pennant. But clever “Connie” Mack has remedied this by developing three youngsters who are performing brilliantly at present. These are Brown, Shawkey and Bush. He Will now be able to ease up on Bender and Plank and give them some of the rest which they will need before the world’s series sets in. : QUOTING FRO LISTER To MY NEw YOURE GotiNA BE A Bovine INSTRUCTOR « TLL Diawers BI ay ALESSeA AND IT UL BE FINE T | LESSON | WE Bart EINE TRAINING FoR ( 9) Joma te bail oh u EME. YER HIRST HPL SIN THE 3a ke Say, : a ows ar a ne . bil = y pi F ~ Spe ‘The Athletics have an easier achedule to face for the next two weeks, when they are meeting the Western clubs, the weak portion of the American League, than the Cleveland boys have. Cleveland will be playing Philadelphia, Boston, Washington and New York. The Athletics and Senators are natur- ally robust teams and hard to beat. The Highianders have found Cleveland to be the on club that they could give &@ battle to all summer, The Naps will have no cinch with the Yankees, While Cleveland is meeting the stronger Easterners, the Athletics will be playing St. Louis, Detroit and Chi- ago, three teams which have fallen down in the race daily within the last month, The Athletics should come home far enough aheod to be able to loaf to the finish, M'LEAN STRENGTHENS CATCH- ING DEPARTMENT OF GIANTS. The Giants are in Just as comfortable & position as the Athletics, My team I know he has a reputation as a bad actor, but he has promised that he will change that reputation here, and I have offered him a reward which should in- duce him to do it. When the Giants were in Cincinnati secently some newapaper correspondent sent out a story talking about trouble on my club and several players attack- | ng me because I had traded Cranall. | The story, of course, came out of whole cloth, but this newspaper treatment made me tired. Asa rule, I don't pay much attention to derogatory articles. It seemed as If somebody was trying to put my club in a bad light. Several of the Cincinnati newspapers have at- tempted, from time to time, to run the Cincinnat! ball club, without much su:- cess. I don't want any of them running mine, McLean has steadied up the team and appears to have given the players more confidence.
