F the law won't allow us to carry a gun these days we can at least go toa play that, without offering a single crook as an excuse, carries one from the first act to the last. This in itself justifies us in shooting off a few enthusi- astic remarks about “Arizona,” that good old gun-metal play which came back ‘with @ bang at the Lyric Theatre last night. As for that deserving democrat and inveterate playwright, Augustus Thomas,’ he carries nothing on his key-ring more deadly than his repeating curtain-speech. In popping out in his accustomed way last night he seemed a bit merciless in taking a shot at poor old Rosedale" and winging the memory of Lester Wal- lack. Apparently the heart of the surviving Playwright is a great deal harder than his goft boiled evening shirt. Times change with the fashions. At the same thme, Mr. Thomas did not merely revive his curtain speech. His play spoke for itself in the language he learned before he gave himsif up to labored theories and buried drama beneath popular psychology. Evidently pains had been taken to rob “Arizona” of some of its earller etmplicity, though here and there sn “aside” came out like a voice from the past. However, smiles were cut short with “neatness and despatch,” az if to prove that the author had no desire to share in the ¢ate of other hilarious revivals. It's @ wise author that knows his own piny may have outgrown its original form. But in this instance there is nothing to feur, “Arigona” has all of its old- time dramatic vigor.
