The special Grand Jury working in conjunction with Justice Seabury of the | Supreme Court to-day began an in- vestigation into the arrest of George A. Sipp in Atlantic City, N. J., and the effort to bring him here on unprintable charges made by two young women. ‘This fact caused a rumor that indict- ments might be found againat members of the Police Department yet unnamed | in District-Attorney Whitman's graft in- Vestigation. Sipp will be an important witness against all these men and is certain to be submitted to a searching cross-ex- amination by Francis Wellman, counsel fer Hussey, who will conduct Sipp's cross-examination, it is understood, on behalf of ali four former inspectors. Gipp will most likely be attacked along the lines of the charges made against him by the police when he first fled from the city and.an effort thus made to discredit his testimony. Im response to subpoenas, Deputy lice Commissioner George 8, Dougherty, Chief Inspector Max Sohmittberger, Lieut. Richard O’Con- nor, Morris Grossman and Martha Miller, better known as “Trixie,” came early to the Criminal Courts Building. O'Connor was called before the Grand Jury first, and for half an hour As- sistant District-Attorney Clark ques- tioned him. Then he was instructed to wait nearby, as he might be wanted again, and Mr. Dougherty took nis place in the witness chair. The Miller woman was the most im- portant witness, as it was she and an- other woman who made the original charges against Sipp. Recently she made an affidavit in the District-Attor- ney's office, revealing her share in the plot to railroad Sipp to jail and dis- erbdit him before the public by trumped up charges of a revolting character, which she afterward Sepudiated, It was to have her tell this story again that she was summoned before the Grand Jury. pane meee na A PALTRY 4 FEET MAKES TROUBLE FOR OSCAR.
