AND 1S FIGHTING Pose oF a UTAL SPOT WITH A CARLOAR oF BIRD SHOT | HAMILTON, Bermuda, March 17.—When the Highlanders arrived here for their training, some two weeks ago, Manager Chance wasn’t sure of the makeup of his infield in any of its four posi- tions. He was doubtful about his ability to cover first again, and the question of his come-back involved the future of Hal Chase. The Peerless Leader learned that he could cover the initial sack with his old accustomed skill, as he pladdd Prince Hal at second, where he also is a fixture. The left side of the field then needed his attention, and if the two men in mind don’t slump from now on, they are sure of permanent berths. The players referred to are Ezra Midkiff, who is covering third bi like a veteran, and Pep Young, who 1s setting the grass afire around short. Chance has been satisfied with Midkiff’s covering of the difficult corner for some time, but it was only re cently that he became entirely pleased with Young’s work. The latter is one of the greatest in- fielders ever seen in spring practice, and if he can only bat as well as he did for Harrisburg, last year’s winner of the Tri-State League title, he has a grand future in the American League. His one weakness is that he swings his bat upward instead of straight or downward, but Chance will undoubtedly be able to cure him of this fault.
