vhead and BELLES VS. HORSE Girls on Mounts Will Count | Fifty and Mounts Fifty in Contest. SOCIETY DONS PLUMAGE ‘Woman Is Queen and Provides a Feast for the Curious Railbirds. quam My word, we're tn for it new! To-night will be THE night at the Horse Show. Society will not only adora the boxes and the arena reservation. Goclety will be in the side saddle. Fwenty-one of ‘our loveliest girls will fide and look their best for the John R. Townsend Cup. Oh, Ia, la! What @ feast for the rallbirds. Beauty and the Beast! Yes, yos, of course, that's been @ela defore, but never so well applied. The dear creatures will have to look thelr best—Jack Townsend says a. Jack ‘Townsend, sartorial Cacsar of the arena, has decreed that tho horse is only to @ome in f half. The horse 6 per cent., the girl the rest. Now, whom do you suppose the bubbling, versatile Jack had in migd when he made that decree? Tt wouldn't $e fair to tell. And it's his @up anyhow and he ought to make the terms. Appointments count % per cent. im the contest. This means beauty, Clothes and style. Riding habit, hat, saddle and bridie all go hair must be becomingly arranged. Her hat must be on straight. Her riding habit must be up to date. Her doots must be polished, there must be no incense of gasoline on her gloves. Her omplexion and hair must harmon- tae with her horse. Of course that will be easy. Her collar must be faultless, her ekirt speckles, her necktie precise. Not @ wrinkle must be visible in her habit, her trousers up to date, her coat of the ‘Townsend idea. LUE AND BLOND GO WELL TO- GETHER. A smile will count for # point and the Jaéy's hair must match the color of the ribbon ehe {s to receive. Blue and blond 0 well together, don't they? Well, well, leave it to Jack. . ‘Horses’ tails and manes were put up fm curl papers last night. No tail nor mane must be braided, There must be fo files on any of the horses. Among the lady riders will be Miss Hopeton D, Atterbury, ‘There 1s hope in the name. She will ride Nickel Plate, & good plate for a blue ribbon. Little Maud Preece will ride for little Miss Mona Dunn, probably on Striker. Mrs. Charles F. Hubbs will be on her mount, Molly Bawn. If the band plays “Gar- gyewen,” look out for Molly Bawn. Among other riders will be Miss Mar- @aret Rouss, Mrs. McKay, Miss Doro- thy Webb, Mrs, W. A. McGtbbon, Mi Lelta Fieltman and Mrs. Cabot Moore. The America Cup, gift of the Hotel Martinique, will be tried for to-night. That will be the real event. Holland won that cup last year, and to-night America is going after it for all her officers are worth. It is some cup and 4t 1s some event. The cup is valued at $850 and the cash prizes amount to $200, ‘Then, of course, there are the ribbons. ‘The spice of excitement was injected 4nto the Horse Show before noon in ‘the class for thoroughbred hunters when Buomit first balked his driyer over hin subsequently outraged the Beenic effects of the hunting course, Raiph Hllis’s bay gelding took the brush deatly enough, but when he came to athe second barrier he balked and stuck his feet into the tanbark, His rider went over his head and stuck athwart the top rail, RIDER PULLED HIMSELF BACK BY HORSE'S EARS. ‘Phe rider's mind was quick to act, and (his hands kept pace with his mind. He grabbed Submit by the ears and hauled himself back into the saddle. He put ‘tie horse over the barrier and went Ailting at the third raf, Submit stuck fis feet through the bars and horee and rider and fence went in a heap to the tanbark, Grooms rushed to thelr ald, land timber and horse and man were wogregated and all put on their feet again. Neither horse nor man was ap- parently hurt, but the contest was over for both. The blue ribbon was award- ed to Algoma, a bay gelding of the Blenheim Farm, Dictator, owned by Major Kilgour, of the Queen's Own Rif given the red. Pagan Kin of the Brandywine Stables got third while Irish Nora of Blenheim Farm got fourth. Two Shetland ponies ridden by two Anttle giris made a lot of fun for the any rallbirds. Pearl was ridden by Mise Mary Cameron and Starratt’s Ruth fvas the mount of Miss Grace Holm. form balked and was suddenly trans- formed into @ little stubborn burro. His ttle rider kicked dls aides and clubbed him, but nothing short of oats could move him and Ruth romped joyously fround the tanbark. Ruth was handed the blue ribbon and Pear! got the red. ‘Another event 18 the high jump. Lit- tle Miss Mona Dunn's Biskra made the record of 8 feet 2 inches this year at The Hague. Biskra will be in the Jump Uhis evening and was never more ft in Dead. Tustice Fred K. Crane adjourned his part of the Brooklyn Supreme Court to-day because of the sudden death of his mother, Mrs. Frederick W. E, Crane, Mra. The funeral witt ; Monday at the Crane home, held Md Halsey street, 4 % SLBLSLLALALLAAAAALALAKK LAM % WORN BY MISS ELEANOR SEARS. FH EE Blue Ribbon Millinery at Horse Show By Mlle. Lodewick. ‘The stunning and beautiful gowns worn at the Horse Show would scarcely be complete without the dats worn with them, or the very becoming hair arrangements. Among the hats I am showing to- day is one worn by Miss Eleanora Sears. Of black velvet, it was of Medium size, rolling ever so slightly on either side. The under brim was gathered, as was also the slightly full crown, held with a cording « ‘ways from the top. A black paradise fancy shot from the left side. The hat was worn very much a-tlit, showing on the one side her well- sroomed hair, beautifully waved. Mrs. Alfred G. Vanderbilt seems rather partial to the girlish, wide brimmed, floppy hats. I saw her a couple of times in a black velvet one, the crown rather low and rounded, with a scant upstanding ruffle of velvet at its base. From either side of tity brim, one from un- der and one from on top, swept white Paradise feathers. The hat worn by Mrs. Seligman Was quite distinctive. It had a very low curved crown, encircled with white moire ribbon laid in over- lapping points, while the brim flared upward all round. From the left side of the under brim a white plume fell toward the right. The hat w. @et quite on the right side a: looked vi chic, On on@ of the promenaders, a pretty“young miss, gowned elegantly in rather quaint style, I was at- tyacted to a wide-brimmed hat of white all-over lace and pink maline. Tho very low square crown was Graped with the maline, while the under brim was of the maline, finely shirred, forming @ dainty facing to the upper brim of shirred lace. A very large flat, wide bow of black velvet, trimming the baek of the hat from side to side, gave a charm- ing effect. A stiff shape of black velvet, dent- ed at the left side, held a tuft of taupe color coque fancy. This shape, which rolled high in front and on the loft side, was most becoming to its wearer, who was a middle-aged wo- maa core A chic ttle figure in the Tyson bex wore @ little hatr or hat ar- rangement of: black maline.
