i AA IN i ce 2 ee ete ‘HIGH FINANCIERS’ REPUT ON TRAL FORLOOTG BANK Head of Audubon National, Promoter and Lawyer, Ac- cused of Misusing Funds, MADE “DUMMY” LOANS. By This Means, It Is Alleged, They Got Control of Insur- ance Company’s Securities. ‘With the stage set in the Criminal Branch of the United States District Caurt, © drama of high finance, involy- fing the alleged looting of the Audubon Wetione! Bank, was unfolded to-day. ‘The peinopais were David 8. Mulls, @ermer President of the bank; Joseph &. Blackburn, a promoter, and Charles ‘W. Ridgway, a lawyer, of No. 100 Broadway. A briltiant array of cousel, inotuding ‘Willem M. Ivins, former State Senator Moule Gqnse, while District-Attorney Henry L. ‘Wise appeared for the Government. The count of the indictment qhargea that Mille, aided and abetted Oy Blackburn ani Ridgway, misapplied $000 of the Audubon Bank's funds, @aying the same on discounted notes. Tneurance Company, a fraternal organi- sation of Athens, Pa. Te was alleged that Bjackburn found ke could get control of the Keystone @ompany, which owned $300,000 in se- ourtties, by paying $100,000 to the con- cern's nine directors. “Dummy” loans of $25,000 each were accordingly made, it ‘was charged, to the stenographer and auditor of the Audubon National, and on July 8, 1910, MiNs, Blackburn and Ridgway went to Athens. By dividing * the 060,000 thay took with them among ‘the directors of the Keystone company, @ccording to the indictment, they were @atied to obtain possession of $100,000 of the fraternal organization's securities. Part of these securities were used, it was said, !n covering the “dummy” Jeans in the Audubon National, while the remainder were sold and the pro- ceeds divided between Mills, Blackburn and Ridgway. Finding their first venture exceedingly profitable, the indictment charges, Mills, Blackburn and Ridgway later got pos- session of 0,000 more of the Keystone Company's securities. This, however, proved a disastrous move for the Key- stone Company, as it soon afterwards went into the hands of a receiver and several of its directors were indloted ia Athens. A further count in the indictment charged Mille with converting $70,000 of his bank's money. Part of this amount represented securities held by the bank as collateral on a Blackburn note. The morning session of court was taken up in the selection of a jury. DON’T BLAME JOHN! IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. Dying Wife of a Policeman, Shot While He Was Cleaning Revol- ver, Exonerates Him.
